OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

This classification requires the performance of precise calibration measurements and repair functions on electrical, electronic, physical, and mechanical type reference and secondary standards, and related equipment on a Navy facility or within Navy vessels. Standards must comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requirements and maintain traceability, including coordination for in‑place calibrations.

Work Performed
  • Plan methods, procedures, and documentation and determine equipment suitability for calibration.
  • Locate faults, perform calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and adjustment in laboratory or in‑place on electrical/electronic or physical/mechanical test, measurement and diagnostic equipment.
  • Conduct calibrations on AC/DC voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, power, phase, frequency, microwave, pressure, vacuum, liquid and gas flow, mass, length, optical, temperature, humidity, torque, force, vibration, and tachometry.
  • Analyze errors and apply NIST, ISO, or other reports for corrections.
  • Maintain current knowledge of equipment and measurement techniques, and perform measurements with minimal direction from metrologists.
  • Assist in generating and proof‑testing new calibration procedures and reviewing/updating procedures for new technology.
  • Use manuals, procedures, data sheets, and recommended equipment to adjust, measure, and record performance parameters during testing and calibration.
  • Identify instruments that can no longer be maintained within tolerances or operated throughout range and recommend retirement, deration, limited performance, or other solutions.
  • Assist metrologists in troubleshooting instrument problems, monitor laboratory standards, troubleshoot and repair laboratory standards, collect trend data, and participate in audits and assessments.
  • Perform in‑place calibrations and related duties as required and provide guidance to less experienced employees.
Basic Qualifications
  • Completion of DoD Calibration School or an Associate of Science degree in Engineering Technology or Electronics, or equivalent technical knowledge from two‑year courses in electronics, metrology, or physical measurements.
  • Skill in developing techniques and procedures for diagnostic malfunction diagnosis during calibration of new instrumentation or systems.
  • Skill in calibration and repair of electrical/electronic, mechanical, and electro‑mechanical instrumentation, including basic DC and AC units, digital equipment, resistance, power supplies, recorders, signal processing equipment, electronic counters, temperature, pressure, and vacuum.
  • Understanding of measurement uncertainty and its application to calibration.
  • Ability to work independently and provide technical assistance to others.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to use general‑purpose hand tools.
  • Skillful use of computers and ability to learn new applications.
  • Ability to qualify for and maintain certifications, qualifications, or licenses required for duties.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a final Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Security Clearance

Position requires a U.S. Secret security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required.
