JOB TITLE:

Health Information Management Technician

REPORTS TO:

JOB OVERVIEW:
Responsible for processing all release of medical records information requests in a timely and efficient manner ensuring accuracy, safeguarding and protecting the patient’s right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all releases of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy and HIPAA regulations.

Salary Range $18.69 - $27.07 (median wage is $23.34)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Exercise sound judgment and critical thinking skills in the execution of job duties
  • Validate requests and authorizations for release of medical information according to established procedures and HIPAA Privacy and Security guidelines and record disclosures in patient electronic charts.
  • Work and coordinate with external medical records release company as needed to meet patients requests that are sent directly to them.
  • Complete release of information requests accurately, timely and correctly, according to requests, established policy and procedures, state and federal regulation, standards of quality and productivity; including electronic transmission of medical records when requested.
  • Accurately and efficiently utilize a computer for data input, retrieval of data, running reports and all other tasks associated with release of information services.
  • Work with minimum supervision, organize workload and prioritize work tasks to meet production goals.
  • Understand, become knowledgeable and remain up to date with Release of Information standards, policies & procedures and HIPAA regulations.
  • Create, contribute to, and maintain updated policies, procedures and step by step instructional materials of all release type processes.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create and submit data reports required for health plans, special audits, and studies, quality monitoring and reporting activities of the organization as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with Coding and Compliance, Clinical Informatics and Information Technology Departments to manage TDC health information in line with business and patient care goals.
  • Facilitate dissolution of paper chart records.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
  • High School Diploma
  • Associates Degree in Health Information Management or related field
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or equivalent desirable.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience preferably with release of information, medical records, or other related experience in a healthcare environment
Skills:
  • Excellent written, oral, instructional, presentation and interpersonal skills focused on motivation and positive attitude. Highly self-motivated, directed and change oriented.
  • Ability to effectively use computer software and technology as required including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Greenway Health’s Intergy / Practice Analytics, or other electronic health record software.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving skills and ability to effectively multitask and execute in a high-pressure environment.
  • Very strong customer service orientation and ability to prioritize..
  • Able to work, contribute to and flourish in a team centric, collaborative environment.
Physical Requirements:

1. Hearing:
Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
2. Speaking:
Must be able to communicate clearly to patients and coworkers in person and over the telephone.
3. Vision:
Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
4. Other:
The position is mostly sitting with standing and walking occasionally throughout the day. Requires frequent lifting and carrying of items weighing less than 5 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 10 pounds. Requires occasional bending and reaching.
