Job Title
Assists with communications and referral support to parents and families qualifying for a target program, such as English Language Development (ELD).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Provides school-to-parent support through personal contacts. Invites parent participation in school and community-based volunteer opportunities.
- Receives referrals and responds to requests for resource information and parent support. Assists in the development and implementation of program oriented community projects.
- Assists with enlisting parent volunteers to help with home to school needs. Assembles small groups of parents for helping each other and for developing home school networks.
- Assists in the presentation of parent workshops for families on topics of interest to families.
- Participates in public awareness activities at the District or during community events (health fairs, etc.) which may include evening and weekend hours.
- Maintains logs and summary reports of parent contacts, learning materials distributed, support groups, parent workshops, etc. Maintains information and communication flow between parents and school personnel.
- May attend community-based programs and events to keep up-to-date with trends and be more familiar with other resources.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
- Requires graduation from high school or equivalent plus experience working with students in an instructional or social service setting, or parent groups (i.e. PTA, volunteers, etc.)
- Requires a valid California driver's license.
- Read, write and speak English fluently. Read, write and speak Spanish fluently.
- The position requires:
Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of age appropriate child development and guidance applicable for an educational setting. Knowledge of basic clerical and record keeping processes. Knowledge of and skill at using personal computers, audiovisual, and other equipment to support learning, record information, and send communications. Sufficient human relation skills to work productively and cooperatively with teachers, district staff, students, and parents in informal settings, exercise patience when conveying information, and demonstrate sensitivity to the special needs of students.
Knowledge of and competency in a second language (Spanish). - Requires the ability to:
Assist teaching staff and program coordinators with implementation of programs and activities to accomplish outreach goals. Interact with teachers, parents, and specialists in order to carry out assigned duties. Enlist parent volunteering. Relate positively to parents and students in a learning environment in a way that builds interaction and rapport between home and school, and recognizes socioeconomic and cultural differences.
Read, write and speak English fluently. Read, write and speak Spanish fluently. - Requires: the ability to perform indoors in a classroom, office, home or other non-school site environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature; near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech ability for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to speak to groups, and to hear sound prompts from equipment; ambulatory ability to move about office, classroom, and school grounds, to tutor, assist with presentations, and reach work materials;
and sufficient manual and finger dexterity to demonstrate presentation aids and to operate personal computers. - Work is performed indoors and outdoors with some, yet infrequent exposure to health and safety considerations.
