Job Summary
The Piping Designer is responsible for developing detailed piping layouts, 3D models, and construction drawings for natural gas and utility infrastructure projects. This role uses AutoCAD Plant 3D and related CAD tools to translate engineering concepts, P&IDs, and project specifications into accurate design deliverables that support construction and field installation.
The Piping Designer works closely with engineers, project managers, and other design disciplines to ensure piping systems meet safety, regulatory, and constructability requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Modeling
- Develop 3D piping models and layouts using AutoCAD Plant 3D for gas utility and industrial projects.
- Create piping isometric drawings, general arrangement (GA) drawings, and plan layouts.
- Route piping systems including gas lines, valves, regulators, and associated equipment.
- Generate pipe support details, tie-in drawings, and equipment layout drawings.
- Interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and engineering specifications to produce detailed design drawings.
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM), material take-offs (MTO), and line lists from the 3D model.
- Maintain drawing revisions and document control in accordance with project standards.
- Coordinate with mechanical, structural, electrical, and instrumentation teams to resolve design conflicts.
- Participate in model reviews and design coordination meetings.
- Support engineers by identifying design issues and recommending improvements.
- Perform site walkdowns and field verification to validate existing conditions and as-built systems.
- Provide design clarifications and revisions during construction as required.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, and gas utility standards).
- Follow company and client design procedures, safety requirements, and QA/QC practices.
Required
- Associate's degree or technical certification in CAD, Drafting, Mechanical Design, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of piping design experience, preferably in oil & gas, utilities, or industrial facilities.
- Strong experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, engineering drawings, and piping specifications.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience with gas utility systems, compressor stations, meter stations, or pipeline facilities.
- Familiarity with Navisworks, Civil 3D, or other 3D modeling software.
- Knowledge of ASME piping codes and industry standards.
- Experience supporting construction or field installation teams.
