Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to drive or operate sanitation trucks along a prescribed route.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the second level in a series of two levels distinguished by
increasing levels of scope, independence, responsibility, and decision-making.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are typical for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude
them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties
may be required and assigned.
Drives brush truck and side-loading and rear-loading sanitation trucks to collect waste along an assigned
route: drives scheduled route; collects and loads waste onto truck; operates mechanisms to secure and
collect waste; and ensures that load is properly balanced, covered, and contained.
Drives assigned vehicles over public roads: maneuvers in and around traffic, parked cars, and other
obstacles; obeys all traffic laws and safety guidelines; and monitors immediate environment and work area
to ensure the safety of operator, other workers, the equipment, and the public.
Utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear: monitors work environment to ensure safety of
employees and other individuals; monitors traffic conditions to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe
traffic conditions; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to
ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual
situations.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may
include a brush truck, rear-loading and side-loading sanitation trucks, leaf trucks, and other tools and
equipment.
Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable
condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing
equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations
to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment to supervisor. City of Simpsonville, SC Technician II – Sanitation
Performs related duties in support of department operations: trains less experienced staff in proper
operation and use of equipment; assists with rear-loading and side-loading sanitation truck routes, as
assigned; and assists during emergency weather events.
Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to
coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one (1) year of experience hauling trees, brush, and
other waste for sanitation and/or recycling purposes; or any equivalent combination of education, training,
and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification
Required:
Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Class B
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
