This position is responsible for the overall leadership and direction of a large urban middle school. It requires the ability to identify professional development needs through employee input, data analysis, research, and best practices identification. The principal is a key facilitator of change that positively affects student achievement, supervises and evaluates certified and non-certified staff, and fosters leadership through coaching, supervision, and training opportunities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide leadership and supervision of staff and encourage creative and innovative instruction.
- Conduct staff meetings as necessary for proper school function.
- Assist in in‑service orientation and training of staff, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions.
- Ensure implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by staff and students.
- Manage and report the school’s needs regarding personnel, curriculum, budgeting, and the physical plant.
- Make recommendations, oversee policies and practices, and implement the assessment of results linked to ensuring gains for all students. Assist in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum and interpret school goals and objectives to students, teachers, and parents.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, affording due process for students’ rights.
- Act as liaison between the school and the community, encouraging community participation in school life.
- Use regular classroom observations to increase teacher effectiveness, demanding high quality performance from all staff.
- Stay abreast of professional developments by attending meetings, reading journals, and discussing issues with peers.
- Promote the District through public relations and present information to the media or Board when called upon.

CompetenciesMaster’s degree in secondary education with an administrative license and evaluator certification required. Three to five years of administrative experience (or equivalent) in secondary education with proven leadership experience. The employee is expected to demonstrate continued professional growth and remain current on new educational strategies.
Academic Leadership SkillsProven understanding of secondary education, curriculum, assessment, professional development, and school improvement. Ability to identify best practices and communicate and implement them. Often required to facilitate change through professional development programs.
Communication SkillsStrong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, present to large audiences, and resolve conflict through facilitation. Dual language skills are preferred.
Listening and Influencing SkillsCareful listening and influencing skills when working with the Board, staff, and parents to create opportunities for change and resolve conflicts.
