OverviewThe position is responsible for the oversight and leadership of a large urban middle school. Serves as a key member of the school administrative team and assists the principal in the daily management and operations of the middle school. Includes responsibility for discipline and attendance of students.
Responsibilities- Serve as an administrative team member for the building and as an advisor to the Building Principal and other District Administrators.
- Provide leadership to staff and encourage creative and innovative instruction; assist in in-service orientation and training of staff, with responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions.
- Assist in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum; interpret school goals and objectives to students, teachers, and parents.
- Structure and utilize regular and systematic classroom observations to increase teacher effectiveness and maintain high standards of performance.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline with due process; act as liaison between the school and the community to encourage participation in school life.
- Stay informed on changes in the profession by attending professional meetings and reading publications; discuss problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
- Implement and carry out district policies.
- Supervise and manage reporting relationships within the building.
- Master’s Degree in Secondary School Administration and Evaluator Certification required.
- Secondary school leadership experience and a commitment to ongoing professional growth.
- Competencies aligned with the Iowa Department of Education guidelines, including leadership, ethics, equity, curriculum and assessment, community engagement, operations, and continuous improvement.
Educational leadership experience at the secondary level; continued professional development is expected.
Financial Management Skills- Understanding of budgeting for student activities and keeping accurate records for inventories, discipline, attendance, and related accounts.
- Ability to prioritize budgeted funds and respond to information requests from the Building Principal and district administrators.
- Listening and influencing skills; ability to work with staff and parents to implement programs and resolve conflicts.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain records and timelines for extracurricular programs and building usage.
- Technology skills to research, present, and communicate effectively.
- Strong communication skills for written and verbal interactions with diverse stakeholders, including Board, community, and parents.
- Decision-making abilities to set courses of action and manage resource priorities with potential impact on climate and student achievement.
- Other relevant skills: analytical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal abilities.
Normal office physical demands; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; typically a moderate noise level; work is primarily indoors.
