Job Description
Mid American Energy Company is seeking a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering who will graduate later than August 2026. This temporary, nonexempt, full‑time hourly position runs through the summer and offers students the chance to apply classroom knowledge to real‑world projects in the energy industry.

Interns will participate in the annual three‑day summer intern event in Des Moines, where they will tour state‑of‑the‑art facilities, network with leadership, and gain a broader understanding of mid‑level projects. Throughout the summer, panels, lunch & learn sessions, and other events will enhance the internship experience.
Responsibilities- Work with construction prints to understand how schematics and wiring diagrams fit together.
- Develop an understanding of substation power equipment functions and uses.
- Learn about SCADA (supervisory, control, and data acquisition) and RTU (remote terminal unit) equipment.
- Assist in designing substation relay replacement and other large substation projects.
- Attend project meetings to report on construction progress.
- Participate in intern events, visiting solar farms, wind farms, and power plants.
- Learn safety rules from OSHA and Mid American and how they apply to the job.
- Perform responsibilities as directed within time frames and with high accuracy.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships within the department and company.
- Maintain the professional competence, knowledge, and skills necessary to complete responsibilities; pursue continuous learning.
- Handle sensitive and confidential company information appropriately.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and workplace safety rules.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, codes, and regulations.
- Prior energy‑industry experience is helpful.
- Strong software skills for data extraction, analysis, and workforce support.
- Effective project management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
- Must be a college student currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in electrical engineering.
- Must be able to work full time from May through August 2026.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
