The emergency room RN is responsible for coordinating the care of patients and families utilizing the nursing process. Summary of duties include: performing a physical and psychological assessment, collection of current symptoms, obtaining a detailed patient history, utilizing nursing knowledge for critical thinking, planning of care, prioritizing of cares, evaluating response to interventions and planning for the needs of the patient and family.

Responsibilities
  • Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient cares and interventions.
  • Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  • Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  • Records patients’ current vital signs per standard.
  • Works directly with physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, intravenous) and records prescribed medications.
Qualifications Education
  • Successfully completed an accredited nursing program required.
  • All newly licensed RNs with less than six (6) months of acute RN experience at the time of application are required to successfully complete the Nurse Residency program.
  • BSN Preferred.
Experience
  • Prefer one (1) year of Emergency Department clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.
License(s)/Certification(s)
  • Valid Nursing License with authorization to work in Iowa required.
  • Basic Certified Life Support certification required.
  • Must possess Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification within 6 months from date of hire required.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course required within one year of hire.
  • Must obtain NIHSS education within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter.
  • Completion of six hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually required.
  • MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behaviors) certified within the first 6 months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment (renewal every year) required.
