Transition Special Education Teacher - Significant Disabilities

Location: Sioux Falls School District Community Campus, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Position: 1.0 FTE, Full Time

Position for  school year. The role includes teaching students with significant disabilities, supporting behavior and transition skills, and collaborating with IEP teams and behavioral support staff.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions
  • Plan and prepare instructional tasks and behavior programming plans aligned with IEP goals and future adult programming.
  • Prepare classroom and community activities that provide opportunities for students to practice generalization of adaptive and behavioral skills.
  • Plan and implement functional curriculum and transition skill programming for classroom and community settings.
  • Related instruction to prior, future learning to support generalization and application of skills.
  • Plan intentional teaching and practice of skills related to adaptive and behavioral deficits as outlined in IEP & BIP.
  • Intensify behavior instruction to prepare students for aging out and accessing future adult programming.
  • Maintain a strong instructional focus utilizing effective instruction elements.
  • Communicate, teach, model, and practice high levels of expectation in the classroom and community.
  • Communicate clear learning goals to students and adapt instruction to meet diverse learning styles.
  • Sequence content at an appropriate pace and use appropriate questioning.
  • Provide ongoing feedback, reinforce students, represent knowledge through non‑linguistic methods, and assess progress.
  • Establish, enforce, and maintain classroom rules and procedures, supporting behavior services and transitions.
  • Support safe, smooth transitions between activities and maximize purposeful instruction time.
  • Leads and participates in IEP meetings, manages IEP documentation, and maintains student records.
  • Communicates with parents routinely, collaborates with community service providers, maintains confidentiality.
  • Collaborates with classroom and behavior support team, participates in professional growth, and completes required trainings.
  • Follow district policies and support district priorities.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Earned Bachelor’s degree and endorsements in teaching assignments. South Dakota teaching certificate required.
  • Successful student teaching experience and experience teaching students with significant disabilities and behavioral challenges.
  • Strong oral and written communication, human relations, leadership, conflict management, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of teaching techniques for students with disabilities and significant behavioral needs.
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Knowledge and training in IEP process, special education law, assessment, and interpretation of data.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current auto insurance.
  • Physical ability to provide classroom and student management and self‑care support, including hand‑eye coordination, speaking, standing, walking, and writing.
Pay & Hours

Salary: $53,981 to $60,793 per year, based on experience.

Pay day:
Last working day of each month.

Hours:

Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM (40 hours per week, 9 months).
