Job Description

We want YOU here! The early childhood program is designed to help our youngest students thrive through engaging, high‑quality learning experiences. Our early childhood staff works with families to provide a safe and nurturing environment focused on growth and to develop relationships with our community to provide early intervention services.

Requirements
  • Education Level: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, or a related field.
  • Certification: Current, valid South Dakota teacher certificate or eligibility for certification.
  • Experience Desired: Endorsement in Early Childhood Education;
    English as a New Language Endorsement; experience working with migrant, multilingual, or culturally diverse populations; experience providing home‑based services or parent coaching; knowledge of Head Start, Migrant Education, and early intervention programs.
  • Physical Requirements: Constant hand‑eye, mind‑eye, hearing, and visual acuity; intermittent speaking, standing, walking, and writing; frequent lifting and carrying, keyboarding and other repetitive motions; ability to lift and carry educational materials and supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Other Requirements: Experience working with young children and families; valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; frequent travel to homes and community locations; work conducted in home, community, and educational settings; flexible work schedule to accommodate family availability, including occasional evening hours; knowledge of child development from birth through age five; understanding of early literacy and early mathematics instructional practices; knowledge of culturally responsive and family‑centered practices;

    strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; ability to work independently and manage a flexible schedule; ability to establish trusting relationships with diverse families and community partners; proficiency in data collection, documentation, and progress monitoring.

Comprehensive Background Check Requirement: Candidates are required to complete a comprehensive background check, including a state and FBI criminal history check with fingerprinting, a sex offender registry check, and a child abuse and neglect registry check. All components must be completed prior to the start of employment and repeated every five years thereafter.

Certification: This position requires a valid South Dakota teaching certification with the correct endorsement.

Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training: South Dakota Codified Law 13‑42‑71 requires certified educators to complete at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years. Compliance is verified through district accreditation reviews. Essential Functions & Duties
  • Instruction and Child Development:
    • Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate home‑based literacy and numeracy activities aligned with early learning guidelines.
    • Support the development of oral language, vocabulary, emergent literacy, phonological awareness, print awareness, and early writing skills.
    • Facilitate activities that promote foundational math concepts, including counting, number recognition, sorting, patterns, measurement, and problem‑solving.
    • Model effective teaching strategies and learning activities for parents and caregivers.
    • Utilize play‑based and relationship‑based instructional practices that support engagement and learning.
  • Family Engagement and Support:
    • Build positive relationships with families and serve as a resource for supporting learning in the home.
