A Brief OverviewAssists in drug preparation, storage, distribution, and inventory management within a variety of pharmacy environments. Technician works under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. Entry‑level position recommended to participate in and complete Avera Health’s Pharmacy Technician Education Program to prepare for Certified Pharmacy Technician examination. Upon successful Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination or other approved certifying body, the technician‑in‑training will be promoted to Pharmacy Technician.
Avera requires a two‑year employment commitment upon completion of the program.
- Participate in the Avera Pharmacy Technician Education Program to become PTCB certified.
- Under pharmacist supervision, accurately input and/or prepare labels and packages for inpatient or outpatient medication orders and prescriptions to maintain an efficient, accurate, and high‑quality medication delivery system.
- Demonstrate proficient knowledge of medications, calculations, regulations, personal protective equipment, and promotion of patient safety.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, customers, co‑workers, supervisors, and management; participate in interdepartmental work groups and committees to promote high‑quality communication and prevent patient harm.
- Perform clerical functions such as billing, patient demographics, pharmacy inventory, and assist with collection and maintenance of records required by the Pharmacy Department and applicable accreditations.
- Assist customers on the phone or in person, run reports, and use automated dispensing systems.
- Perform monthly inspections of medication stocks in assigned areas and assist with inventory to prevent drug shortages or excesses.
- Apply compounding practices (e.g., botox, chemotherapy) as required.

RequiredEducation, License/Certification, or Work Experience
- Pharmacy Technician in Training:
Registered with South Dakota Board of Pharmacy within 30 days. - Certified Pharmacy Technician:
Board of Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician Board Certification or an equivalent approved training/certification program; extensions beyond 1 year may be available for some states.
- High School or GED Equivalent
- Less than 1 year of related experience
