Overview
K ’s Science and Space Division is seeking a Software Engineer / Web Developer to support our Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center near Sioux Falls, SD. Learn more about EROS and Sioux Falls http://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). This is a mid-level role for a Software Engineer with a strong web development background.
You’ll join a talented team building cutting-edge, web-based mapping tools that support critical science projects serving communities in areas such as wildland fire management, drought monitoring, and land cover mapping.

Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain websites and mapping applications for visualizing and distributing geospatial data.
- Create Python scripts to produce geospatial data products.
- Work with technologies including PHP, Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML.
- Collaborate with a skilled web development team supporting the USGS EROS Integrated Science Applications Branch.
Required Education & Experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation for facility access and user accounts.
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science.
- 3–5 years of recent, relevant work experience.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Solid understanding of software engineering methodologies and processes.
- Experience with:
- Web design, administration, and database-driven applications.
- PHP and MySQL.
- JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and React.
- Python programming.
- Databases (MySQL, Postgre
SQL). - Security concepts.
- Collaboration tools.
Equivalent education and or experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Laravel or similar frameworks.
- Experience with requirements and design analysis.
- Knowledge of testing and configuration management tools (e.g., Git).
- Experience with GIS systems and tools (commercial or open source).
- Understanding of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specifications (WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS) and OGC APIs.
- Familiarity with spatial data, reference, and projection systems.
Work Location
This position is based at the USGS EROS Center and offers a hybrid remote/on‑site schedule.
