This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position with the Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections is committed to providing meaningful work opportunities that develop vocational skills, promote accountability, and support successful reentry.
This position supervises a combined Garment and Upholstery shop within a Correctional Facility. The shop foreman oversees incarcerated workers engaged in the production, repair, alterations, and assembly of garments, textile products, upholstered furniture, cushions, and related products for state and local governments, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and state employees. Production activities may include but are not limited to: industrial sewing, embroidery, pattern layout, cutting, measuring, fabric and material selections, garment construction, screen printing, alterations, upholstery fabrication, furniture recovering, foam cutting, cushion construction, installation of hardware and trim, finishing, packaging, and quality control.
The foreman is responsible for balancing security, safety, productivity, quality control, and inventory management while developing workforce skills that prepare individuals for employment upon release.
The Garment/Upholstery Shop Foreman is responsible for the overall operation of the garment/upholstery shop, including production, scheduling, worker management, quality control, customer service and support, inventory management, purchasing, equipment oversight, safety, and workforce development. This position functions as both a production supervisor and business manager. The foreman directs and trains incarcerated workers while ensuring adherence to the Department of Corrections policies and maintaining a secure work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides daily work direction and supervision to incarcerated workers to ensure production goals and shop objectives are met.
- Interviews, selects, assigns, evaluates, and recommends termination of incarcerated workers.
- Trains workers in industrial sewing, garment construction, upholstery techniques, embroidery, measuring, cutting, assembly, equipment operation, quality standards, as well as the safe use of tools and chemicals.
- Coordinates workflow between garment production or upholstery production, cutting, sewing, embroidery, assembly, finishing, packaging, and shipping.
- Develops and maintains production schedules to meet deadlines, maximize efficiency, and ensure timely completion of customer orders.
- Communicates with customers regarding project specifications, timelines, product options, quality concerns, and order status.
- Resolves customer concerns in a professional and timely manner.
- Insures quality control standards are met, and products and products conform to customer expectations.
- Assigns tasks based on individual skill levels to promote productivity and skill development.
- Monitors shop safety and enforces all safety procedures and department policies.
- Maintains accountability for chemical, tools, materials, equipment, inventory, incarcerated workers.
- Conducts safety meetings and reinforces safe work practices.
- Orders supplies, materials, and equipment, and maintains appropriate and balanced inventory levels.
