Join the Sanford Children's Specialty Clinic Palliative Care Team as an APP. This clinician will join a team of physicians who provide palliative care to pediatric patients and families in inpatient pediatric settings (PICU, NICU, Peds Floor, and Ava's House). Additionally, they will provide care in the OB setting (inpatient high-risk OB and outpatient Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic.). The ideal candidate is motivated to learn, highly collaborative, team-focused, adaptable, and committed to delivering high-quality care to a diverse pediatric population.
The role will include night and weekend call coverage.
Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Pediatric Nursing (CHPPN) is preferred but not required.
Job SummaryThe Pediatric Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care focused on improving quality of life for children with serious, chronic, or life-limiting illnesses. The NP works in collaboration with physicians, families and interdisciplinary teams to manage symptoms, support emotional and developmental needs, and guide complex decision-making. Conduct thorough assessments of pediatric patients with complex medical conditions.
Develop and implement individualized care plans addressing symptom management, pain control, and psychosocial support tailored to children.
Manage medications including analgesics, antiemetics, anxiolytics, and other supportive therapies with pediatric dosing considerations.
Facilitate family-centered goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning, and end-of-life decision-making.
Coordinate care among pediatric specialists, primary care providers, social workers, chaplains, and hospice services.
Provide education, emotional support, and counseling to patients and families.
Document clinical assessments, treatment plans, and progress in electronic medical records.
Participate actively in interdisciplinary team meetings, care conferences, and quality improvement projects.
Advocate for the child's and family's preferences, cultural needs, and dignity throughout the care process.
This position also provides on-call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours.
QualificationsCompletion of a master’s, postmaster’s, or doctorate from an accredited nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
If Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, master’s degree in nursing is preferred.
Experience in pediatric palliative care, hospice, oncology, or critical care preferred.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
National board certification as a Pediatric Primary Care (CPNP-PC) or (PPCNP-BC), Pediatric Acute Care (CPNP-AC), Family (NP-C) or (FNP-BC)
Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
