Native American Cultural Coordinator

PRIMARY PURPOSE / FUNCTION OF POSITION:
Develop opportunities for participants to participate in culturally enriching experiences to increase their knowledge and understanding of the traditions of their culture. Provide experiences specific to Native American culture that support improved marriage and relationship skills. Develop and provide opportunities to expose participants and families to the traditional Native American culture through activities that show respect for the sacredness and individuality of each person.

REPORTS TO:

Project Coordinator

PRIMARY DUTIES:

1. Provide direction, support and competencies specific to Native American Cultural Programming

A. Provide clients with an opportunity to participate in activities that are developed to enhance and work hand in hand with participants in the development of healthy marriage and relationship skills. Cultural activities may include: visits from elders, storytelling, meditation, sweat lodge, talking circle, traditional arts, crafts, games.

B. Work with key leadership staff to teach cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse beliefs and traditions.

C. Present healthy marriage and relationship educational groups specific to Native American culture and facilitate discussion with participants

2. Act as an advocate for Native American client families as appropriate.

3. Conduct in-services for other HMRE staff as appropriate.

4. Demonstrate a professional demeanor and represent Healthy Marriage and Relationship

Education staff in an ethical manner at all times.

5. Responsible for other duties as negotiated.

Relief position requiring some flexibility

EXPERIENCE /

EDUCATION:

Knowledge and experience working with Native Americans and traditional Native American culture required. Good organization skills, team player, good communicator and motivator. Experience in chemical dependency treatment is desirable. Requires consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in the performance of duties.
