Trail Construction Laborer

Kijik Technical Services Various AK locations AK

  • Kijik Technical Services, LLC (KTS), a subsidiary of the Kijik Corporation, is hiring experienced trail construction
    professionals to support 2026 trail projects. Project hires will be responsible for performing trail construction using
    both manual and mechanized equipment on hiking, biking and other trails. Applicants will work and live in a
    variety of outdoor settings, including parks, nature reserves and wilderness areas. Applicants preferably have
    knowledge in the trail construction field and be familiar with various trail building techniques. Previous experience
    with trail construction is desired.
    EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
    Full-time Seasonal. This position is seasonal employment with individuals engaged to work full-time hours with the
    understanding that their employment will be terminated no later than the completion of their specific
    assignment(s). Employees are considered non-exempt and are eligible for overtime pay per Alaska law and federal
    requirements. Seasonal employees are not eligible for Kijik Corporation benefits except as mandated by law or
    benefit policy.
    LOCATION AND

    WORK SCHEDULE:

    The position location will be primarily in the southcentral Alaska area. Known project locations are Turnagain Pass,
    Whittier, Chugiak and Homer. Other project locations are possible if new work is contracted.

    Work Schedule:

    The schedule will be rotational, with approximately 1 to 10 days on and 4 to 12 days off. Other
    work schedules are possible.

    Hours:

    Field hours; (estimated 8 to 10 hours per day) additional time might be
    necessary to finish up certain features of work or in anticipation of weather events which could impact safe
    working conditions.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Perform duties such as physical labor, digging, lifting, cutting, hauling, or other duties as assigned.
    • Operate a chain saw, powered brush cutter or other small, powered tools.
    • Attend the daily tailgate meeting where safety and daily planned activities are discussed by the Superintendent with the field crew.
    • Safely follow direction given by Superintendent.
    • Conduct all interaction with the field crew and site visitors in a professional manner.
    • Perform trail construction, but not limited to, pruning, clearing debris, and repairing erosion.
    • Remove fallen trees and other hazards that may impede trail user safety.
    • Install and maintain trail signs, markers, and barriers.
    • Construct, repair and maintain trail infrastructure.
    • Operate and perform general maintenance on hand and power tools, including chainsaws, trimmers, brush cutters etc.
    • Monitor trail conditions, mitigating hazards. Marking and reporting any safety hazards or trail damage clearly to crew.
    • Perform basic construction tasks, such as building structures or installing fencing etc.
    • Assist with trail mapping, flag line and design as needed.
    • Work with other crew members to plan and execute trail construction and maintenance projects.
Education or

Skills:
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment. This includes experience in the safe use, operation and maintenance
    of various tools including but not limited to chainsaws, hand saws, shovels, rakes, etc.
    • Follow safety procedures communicated by Superintendent, field crew or managers. Having a good understanding of safety and the procedures needed when working in dangerous terrain, around heavy equipment and near others.
    • Attention to detail. The ability to identify and/or fix potential hazards. Following through on a task or small project with the utmost care and efficiency.
    • Communication. The ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, crew members and the public.
    • Adaptability. The ability to adapt to changing work conditions, environment, weather and other unforeseen events/challenges.
    • Teamwork. The ability to work effectively and safely with others.
Position Requirements :
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment associated with trail maintenance and building.
    • Possess a valid driver's license and a current and clean motor vehicle record.
    • Work and live with others in a crew setting for up to 21 or more days at a time.
    • Work weekends, holidays, and flexible hours as needed.
    • Physical stamina and ability to perform physically demanding tasks while working in various outdoor and weather-related environments.
    • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand to operate tools and possibly repair heavy equipment.
    • Must be able to work in all types of weather, including hot and extremely cold temperatures and wet conditions.
    • Ability to lift up to 50lbs repeatedly.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Current Wilderness First Aid or First Responder certification.
    • Preferred minimum of 1 years' experience in trail construction or a related field.
    • Strong safety ethos and respect for the land.
    • Familiarity with basic trail construction techniques.
