The Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and engineering operations of the assigned Alaskan Dream Cruise vessel. The engineer maintains the vessel to Alaskan Dream Cruises (ADC) standards, including all applicable regulatory requirements. The engineer ensures that all systems and components are kept to a standard that allows for the vessel's safe, comfortable, and timely operation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Chief Engineer
  • Responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of all systems in the engineering spaces. Including:
    • Propulsion systems and controls
    • Bilge and fire systems
    • Electrical systems and components
    • HVAC systems
    • Various pumps and piping systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and fuel and oil systems.
  • Maintenance of these systems centers on the preventive maintenance plan in place on the vessel. Chief Engineer required to keep the vessel's Master and the Port Engineer notified of condition of systems and to report maintenance needs that affect operation.
  • Maintain and repair deck machinery such as capstans, winches, davits, and miscellaneous hydraulics.
  • Keep the potable water system up to ADEC standards and ensure proper documentation and records prove compliance.
  • Maintain and repair hotel systems such as air conditioning and plumbing and respond to passenger and crew complaints about these systems.
  • Regularly inspect all voids and bilges for structural and watertight integrity. Report all findings to the Master of the vessel.
  • Ensure all voids and bilges are kept clean and dry in compliance with pollution control regulations.
  • Follow vessel and company guidelines to ensure that fueling and oil bunkering are completed safely.
  • Provide the vessel's Master with daily fuel reports and inform him before any fuel is bunkered.
  • Assist the deck department with line handling and rigging the ship's gangway.
  • Maintain proper engineering logs as directed by the Port Engineer. This includes the daily, fuel, and waterlogs, gray and black waterlogs, preventive maintenance records, and machinery index.
  • Assist the Port Engineer with developing the current ship maintenance projects for the annual repair period.
  • Responsible for planning and performing all duties to make the vessel ready for sea, carrying out all preventative maintenance, and making all necessary repairs while underway.
  • Train and guide other crew to operate various engineering systems.

Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.

Minimum Qualifications for Chief Engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field and/or 3-5 years of experience in Shipyard or Marine Engineering.
  • Education requires specialized or technical knowledge and formal training in operating and maintaining all onboard systems, including diesel mechanics, marine electricity, refrigeration, and hydraulics.
  • Strong communication skills: verbal, non-verbal, and writing skills, as well as the ability to communicate written technical information.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to manage situations where issues must be resolved satisfactorily.
  • Strong project management, technical knowledge, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Must be experienced at multi-tasking and remain flexible in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.
Preferred Qualifications for Chief Engineer
  • Experience in tourism and/or cruise industries.
  • Strong understanding of vessel construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of marine engineering, including electrical systems.
