Role Overview

Reporting to the Senior Water Resources Engineer, the Water Resources Engineer, Tailings & Water is a progressive position. Responsibilities range from maintaining and continuously updating the site water balance to assistance in characterization of site hydrology and hydrogeology, maintaining and updating the sites water quality mass balances, and support for maximizing site’s water treatment capabilities. The Water Resources Engineer also develops budgets, manages costs and provides expertise on other Tailings & Water Projects.

Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on‑site with 2 weeks off‑site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations
  • Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretations, reporting and recommendations
  • Ensure that projects associated with tailings and mine water management are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permits
  • Assist in managing site’s water resources and water quality, including maintenance and updates to the operational water balance, development of water management plans, ensuring adherence to Teck’s Water Governance initiatives, updating and maintaining water quality mass balances & predictions, and assessment of Acid Rock Drainage interception
  • Aggregating, organizing, managing, and analyzing data on groundwater, surface water, subsurface water, pumping, climate, demographics, typically in a GIS/database environment (Esri ArcGIS)
  • Develop and maintain water and load balance models in Goldsim
  • Water quality and predictive water quality modeling (geochemical modeling)
  • Contaminant transport prediction (in conjunction with soil and ground water models)
  • Data manipulation/analysis in spreadsheets, databases, and GIS using automation techniques such as PowerBI
  • Characterizing acid rock drainage and metals leaching potential
  • Communicate effectively with operating, geology, technical groups and contractors; and liaise with outside agencies to meet the operations overall objectives
  • Conduct hydrologic modelling, as required, for various site facilities using Gold Sim and other relevant software
  • Conduct hydrologic investigation to better understand the hydrology around the operation
  • Participate in developing junior professionals, technicians, and other team members by participating in their selection, training, evaluating their performance, and by following, enforcing and administering company policies in a fair and equitable manner

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (water resources, environmental, chemical, geochemical, mining or equivalent)
  • Two (2) years (three years preferred) of relevant experience in water resources management or hydrology studies that included evaluation of water quantity and quality at mine sites
  • Four (4) years of mining industry experience
  • Experience in water chemistry/water treatment
  • Proficient in the use and application of Gold Sim modeling software for water balance modeling
  • Exposure to mining in cold climates is considered an asset, but is not required
  • Required experience at a fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) facility
