Job Description

THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION EMPLOYEES ONLY

This position is being recruited for in Anchorage, Soldotna, Wasilla, Fairbanks, or Juneau.

Pay will be determined based on

location

of selected individual.

Anchorage, Soldotna, Wasilla salary: $3,810.75

Fairbanks salary: $3,924.75

Juneau salary: $4,001.25

What you will be doing:
  • Writing and maintaining wastewater discharge and solid waste management permits for mine facilities
  • Serving as a technical expert on issues related to mining and mine engineering
  • Understanding and applying state and federal laws including the Clean Water Act and the Alaska Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
  • Advising management on policy issues relevant to your expertise

The working environment you can expect:

This position is being flexibly staffed at offices around the State, though the workload is primarily focused on mines in the northern and western parts of Alaska so you should be prepared for travel passing through Anchorage and Fairbanks. At any office, the team is friendly, professional, and collaborative.

We are looking for a candidate that has experience in the following areas:

Environmental Engineering:

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; and to monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollutants.

Mining Engineering:

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to rock mechanics; the exploration, excavation, extraction, processing and transporting of mineral resources; and the conservation and development of mineral lands, materials, and deposits.

Written Communication:

Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving:

uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.

Interpersonal

Skills:

Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.

Special Notice:

Must possess and maintain an Alaska professional engineering license.

Valid Alaska Driver's License is required

Requires regular travel within the State, including to remote areas to conduct site visits.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • AND
  • One year of professional experience as an Engineering Associate 1 (or the equivalent) with the State of Alaska or elsewhere.

Note:

"Professional engineering" includes the branches listed in 12 AAC 36.990 (17).

Positions in this class require professional registration as an Engineer with the State of Alaska.

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

Some positions require the incumbent to have specific education and/or experience in a particular branch of engineering. This requirement will be addressed in the Position Description and job posting.
