Fire Management Officer – Glennallen, Alaska
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting for a Fire Management Officer (FMO) in Glennallen. Alaska residents only.
About This PositionThe FMO reports to the Coastal Region Fire Management Officer and is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, evaluating, and supervising multiple operations and projects related to the Area's fire management program.
The position manages Initial Attack Operations, Prevention, Fuels, Training, and Crew programs within the area. It is a regular full‑time supervisory position.
Duty station:
Mile 110 Richardson Hwy, Glennallen, AK 99588.
Responsibilities include command, clear thinking, and decisive action during prolonged or multiple incidents. The position requires a NIMMS-ICS Red Card and an “Arduous” physical fitness rating. Expected to work up to sixteen hours per day during the fire season.
Key Responsibilities- Fire Management – Apply knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and practices of fire management, including prescribed fire operations, detection, prevention, suppression, and integration with natural resource management.
- Risk Management – Assess risk and develop mitigation strategies; evaluate failures and their consequences.
- Incident Management – Protect, analyze, prioritize, and handle incidents using appropriate tactics, technologies, and processes.
- Supervision – Plan, distribute, and monitor work assignments; evaluate performance; provide feedback; ensure fair treatment; appoint, transfer, promote, discipline, or discharge staff; adjudicate grievances.
- Teamwork – Encourage cooperation, trust, and group identity; foster commitment; work collaboratively to achieve goals.
- Associate’s degree, 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of post‑secondary education, or certification from an accredited vocational technical school in forestry, natural resources, emergency management, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of journey‑level experience in technical aspects of forest management (e.g., fire prevention, suppression, timber sales, reforestation, inventory).
- Alternative:
Certification within the preceding three (3) years as Qualified for Division/Group Supervisor (DIVS) or Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) in the National Incident Management System (Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide) substitutes for the required education.
- Qualified at and maintain a Red Card – “Arduous” physical level;
Red Card qualification under the Incident Command System. - Ability to travel within and outside Alaska for suppression assignments; may be on stand‑by or recall status during the fire season; may be absent from duty station for 14–21 days.
- May operate small aircraft or helicopters and handle hazardous materials.
