Fire Management Officer – Glennallen, Alaska
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting a Fire Management Officer (FMO) open to Alaska residents only. The FMO reports to the Coastal Region Fire Management Officer and is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, evaluating, and supervising operations and projects related to the area’s fire management program.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe FMO will manage Initial Attack Operations, Prevention, Fuels, Training, and Crew programs within the area. The officer is a supervisory role, working up to sixteen hours per day during the fire season.
Competencies & Skills- Fire Management – knowledge of fire management concepts, principles, theories, behaviors, ecology, prescribed fire strategies, detection, prevention, suppression, and integration with natural resource management.
- Risk Management – skills in risk assessment and mitigation, including understanding failures and consequences.
- Incident Management – tactics, technologies, principles, and processes to protect, analyze, prioritize, and handle incidents.
- Supervision – planning, distributing, and monitoring work assignments; setting task priorities; evaluating performance; hiring and developing staff; fair treatment; disciplinary action.
- Teamwork – encouraging cooperation, trust, group identity, and teamwork.
• Either an associate’s degree (24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours) or a certification from an accredited vocational‑technical school in forestry, natural resources, emergency management, or a related field.
• Two years of journey‑level experience in forest management practices such as fire prevention, fire suppression, timber sales, reforestation, or inventory.
• Positions require Red Card qualification under the Incident Command System and an Arduous physical fitness level. Red Card must be maintained throughout the fire season.
• Travel may be required both in and out of state for fire suppression assignments, on stand‑by or recall status, and work that may require absence from duty station for 14 to 21 days.
• Ability to operate small fixed‑wing aircraft or helicopters and handle hazardous materials.
