This position is responsible for the leadership, supervision, and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the commissioned staff and the students attending the DPS Training Academy.

Monitor, mentor, and provide feedback for DPS Training Academy staff instructors (corporals).

Provide instruction, leadership skills, mentoring and performance documentation for classes of 50 or more students with a variety of backgrounds and law enforcement experience.

Work closely and maintain positive relationships with the staff and leadership from a variety of federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations and academy contractors.

Set an example for staff instructors and students to emulate in the areas of attitude, judgment, maturity, professionalism, appearance, knowledge of core Law Enforcement job functions, physical fitness and abilities, being technically and tactically proficient, and interacting with others.

Be a motivated self-starter and a collaborative, flexible problem solver who is able to understand and carry out the commander’s intent and daily administrative tasks without the need for daily guidance and with a very high degree of attention to detail.

Have a good working knowledge of policies and procedures outlined in the OPM, SOP, Alaska Statutes, Admin Manual, and labor contracts.

Be proficient in the use of APSIN, ARMS, TRACS, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Three years of experience as a law enforcement officer certified by the Alaska Police Standards Council or by an equivalent agency in another U.S. jurisdiction outside the State of Alaska that is recognized by the Alaska Police Standards Council, where at least one year of the required experience is as a State Trooper with the State of Alaska, Department of Public Safety.

Some positions, as identified by the department, may require specialized training or experience (investigations, vessel operation, or licensed aircraft pilot).
