Speech Therapist

This position is focused on providing general speech-language pathology evaluations and treatments that impact a patient's functional abilities. The clinician performs in a professional manner, respects confidentiality, and demonstrates qualities endorsed by service excellence standards. Services are to be provided in compliance with regulatory and practice standards of speech-language pathology and the national professional guidelines established by the relevant associations. Speech-language pathologists are responsible for patient assessment, evaluation, establishing a plan of care, and therapeutic interventions for a wide range of ages with varying diagnoses and skill needs.

The clinician must inform clinical teams regarding decisions that involve speech-language therapy while considering consultation provided by other care providers. Recommendations regarding patients' levels of independence and rehabilitation needs may impact services, care placement, and further treatment. The role requires accountability for contributions to program development, quality improvement, and productivity enhancement in an interdisciplinary manner. Documentation and processing interventions appropriately must be followed for continuity of care and reimbursement for services.

The position involves working in various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, community events, home visits, and remote locations. Good judgment, tact, and personal skills are necessary for positive working relationships between patients and co-workers. There are potential risks involved, and precautions and appropriate protective equipment are necessary. The job may require physically demanding movements and positions, requiring good body mechanics and judgment.

Services may involve occasional travel to remote areas, possibly in harsh weather conditions.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities:

• Provides services by physician referral in multiple settings, including inpatient and outpatient.
• Carries out assessment, performs evaluation, identifies therapy diagnosis, formulates a therapy treatment plan with goals, and implements treatment for speech-language pathology services to patients.
• Implements, supervises, and modifies therapy plans of care based on assessments of patient responses to optimize outcomes.
• Reviews clinical records and case histories, attends care conferences, and collaborates with other rehabilitation professionals.
• Documents patient encounter findings and treatments in format according to policies.
• Provides services in a timely manner after receipt of referrals as assigned.
• Directs the work of support staff, students, or interns as necessary.
• Implements and conducts patient education programs based on patient and family needs.
• Advises patients and families in methods that facilitate self-care and independence.
• Conducts home assessments for evaluating patients' living arrangements and implementing therapy plans in home environments.
• Assists in administrative matters, clinic operations, and specialty/research areas as appropriate.
• Maintains supply stocks and clinical area at acceptable levels.
• Remains current on billing procedures to aid in reimbursement of services.
• Maintains cleanliness of clinical space.
• Educates staff on speech-language pathology issues and educates patients/families with therapeutic exercises and activities.
• Assists in representing the Client Department as requested.
• Participates in projects or health promotion teams as assigned.
• Keeps current with knowledge of therapy procedures and techniques through learning opportunities.
• Adheres to practice standards of speech-language pathology and confidentiality standards.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to cross-cultural issues.
• Performs other duties or activities as assigned.
