Brief Position

Description:

The 4-H Youth Living With the Land and Building Community Coordinator position at the Sitka Conservation Society serves to put sustainability and environmental conservation into practice by collaborating with community partners to create 4-H programs and activities for youth that combine knowledge from elders on "how to live with the land" with our current pursuit of "what sustainability looks like" to create and practice skills-sets, knowledge, and values that help Alaska youth prepare for the future.

Day in Life of JV

The Living with the Land and Building Community Coordinator would begin service in the office mid-morning and spend half of their day organizing and planning 4-H Way of Life programs. This could be prepping an activity on some new practice, technique, skill, or value related to the 4-H club program in which they are coordinating. An afternoon meeting of 4H would include the JV leading an activity and supporting the youth in the club grow, connect with the Alaskan environment, and learn to be important and contributing members of their community.

At least once a week, the JV would connect with SCS staff on projects or activities they are conducting together. The JV would lend their ideas and insights and likely be a sounding board for ideas. Further, they would continuously do independent research to engage and become more involved with the community. This service is critical to the SCS mission of protecting the natural environment of the Tongass and building sustainable communities in Southeast Alaska.
