Emergency Room Nurse

The clinical nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. Professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments are required. The ability to work independently in completing assignments is essential. Guidelines include provider's orders, standards of care, nursing policies and procedures manuals, and hospital policies. Nursing duties include support to individuals of all ages and their families.

Clinical decisions are made independently during the scheduled shift. The nurse maintains complete accountability for all actions taken. Consultation with the appropriate supervisor and/or ancillary department is necessary in difficult situations requiring additional input or resources. The nurse must react calmly and make sound nursing judgments in emergencies. Proper delegation and supervision of CNAs/Techs are the nurse's responsibility. Accountability involves promoting standards of excellence and implementing safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients.

Nursing care should be provided for patients with needs due to multisystem disease and/or complications of treatment. The nurse must anticipate potential problems and adapt to changes in patient status and emergencies. Nursing procedures must be initiated, managed, and documented consistent with scientific principles and departmental policy. Accurate administration of age-specific medications and therapeutics is mandatory. Collaboration with physicians and other healthcare team members in coordinating patient care activities is essential.

The nurse should initiate actions to reduce, correct, or prevent risks to patients. Facilitating healing by providing individualized, goal-oriented nursing care based on scientific principles is expected. Effective communication and interaction with patients and their significant others in a supportive way are crucial. The nurse must provide counseling using emotional, intellectual, and psychological supports as needed. Evaluation of patient progress towards goals and directing new goal settings are necessary.

Documentation of the patient's response to care is required. Nursing assessments should be accomplished through interviews, observations, and the nursing process. The nurse will be responsible for obtaining, interpreting, and applying age-related patient information. Completing thorough nursing admission databases and initial patient assessments is vital. Identifying problems and nursing diagnoses by recognizing the impact of health issues on patients and families is necessary.

The nurse must distinguish between normal and abnormal assessments. Development of care plans based on existing and potential patient problems is required. Transcription and noting of physician orders accurately is fundamental. The nurse must document reassessments that include laboratory results and interdisciplinary notes. Providing education to develop skills and promote understanding among patients and families is part of the role.

Engagement in ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching is expected. Participation in patient care conferences and development of educational programs is encouraged. Completion of all mandatory training and competency checks is required. Effective communication with staff, patients, and other healthcare team members is essential. Assisting in the orientation of new staff and providing feedback is part of the job.

The nurse must follow and direct others in adhering to hospital policies and procedures. Participation in department meetings and compliance with scheduling guidelines is necessary. The nurse should address employee concerns according to policy and refer unresolved issues as needed. Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes is required. Competency to recognize emergency situations and act promptly is essential.

Knowledge of general pharmaceuticals, medical equipment operation, and specialty area procedures is necessary. The nurse must have strong oral and written communication skills. Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members is crucial. The ability to implement therapeutic interventions based on nursing diagnoses is required. Recognition of adverse signs and symptoms and prompt intervention are essential in emergencies.
