Position: Park Technician 1

What You Will Be Doing

  • Maintain and improve park facilities and trails by performing routine repairs, building and grounds maintenance, vegetation clearing, inspections, and janitorial services to ensure safe, clean, and functional recreation areas.
  • Lead and facilitate the Alaska Conservation Corps and Volunteers In Parks programs, including recruitment, hiring, training, and assigning daily tasks.
  • Provide visitor services, educational outreach, and interpretive programming to park visitors and the local community.
  • Operate and care for state equipment, including trucks, ATVs, boats, snow machines, and power tools.
  • Perform administrative tasks that support field operations, including grant writing, timekeeping, purchasing, filing, and report writing.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

This position is based at Halibut Point State Recreation Site in Sitka, Alaska. Situated on Baranof Island, Sitka is one of Alaska's oldest communities offering a rich blend of Alaska Native culture and Russian‑American history. Surrounded by mountains and forests, this scenic coastal community offers a small‑town feel, essential amenities, and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. The role is field‑oriented, with daily work involving operating vehicles and equipment, maintaining outdoor trails and facilities, interacting with visitors, and leading the volunteer and Alaska Conservation Corps programs in all weather conditions.

Travel, often by boat, snow machine, ATV, or small plane, is an expected part of this position with periodic overnight stays in remote park sites or other Southeast Alaska communities.
