Purpose

This Ameri Corps position focuses on long‑term monitoring of park resources, including oceanography, intertidal communities, hydrology, water quality, seabirds, marine mammals, glaciers, and weather. Data will inform management decisions and enhance visitor experience for the 750,000 visitors who visit Southeast Alaska National Park Service units annually.

Responsibilities & Duties

The assistant will collaborate with scientists and resource managers from the NPS Southeast Alaska Network. Primary tasks include:

  • Conduct field and office projects for long‑term monitoring of oceanographic, hydrologic, and biological resources.
  • Collect, analyze, and manage long‑term time‑series data (>30 years) using GIS, R, and reproducible workflows.
  • Prepare technical reports, resource briefs, poster presentations, and contributions to published datasets on the NPS Data Store.
  • Assist in a super‑vised independent project that synthesizes interdisciplinary monitoring data, tailored to the applicant’s background and interests.
  • Support park interpretation staff by providing data to enhance visitor use and experience.
Deliverables
  • Published data sets for natural resource data (required and delivered on NPS Data Store)
  • Technical reports, resource briefs, and poster presentations
  • Co‑authorship of peer‑reviewed publications
  • Independent project synthesis of long‑term monitoring data (subject to applicant’s skill level and interests)
Qualifications
  • United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate; or a plan to obtain a high school diploma prior to receiving the education award.
  • Eligibility verification and completion of a National Service Criminal History Check and a separate government security background check.
  • Availability to serve the entire 52 weeks of the term.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BA, BS, or MS in a Natural Sciences field (Biology, Ecology, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Quantitative Ecology, Data Science, Physical Sciences, GIS, etc.).
  • Experience or knowledge of scientific field research methods.
  • Prior experience working in remote or harsh environments.
  • Backcountry skills such as hiking, boating, or navigating rugged terrain.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to challenging field conditions.
  • Ability to collaborate on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (training may be available).
  • Experience with GIS and data management is useful.
  • Experience with R, Python, and reproducible workflows is useful.
Position Setting

Field projects will be conducted under the supervision of National Park Service scientists in coastal NPS units in Southeast Alaska, including Glacier Bay National Park, Wrangell‑St. Elias National Park, Sitka National Historical Park, and Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Office work will be available at the Glacier Bay Field Station in Juneau or the Glacier Bay Visitor Center in Bartlett Cove.
