PUBLIC WORKS MECHANIC AND PORT MECHANIC

Qualifications

Five years of prior experience as a mechanic, with the ability to work on gas and diesel engines. Certification for diesel engine repairs preferred. Knowledge and understanding of diagnostic equipment and programs for troubleshooting and repairs. Ability to read and understand Parts/Maintenance Manuals. Candidate must possess basic computer skills for research, parts procurement, diagnostics, and work order entry at a minimum.

Must be 18 years of age or older, undergo a criminal history check, and pre-employment drug testing. Current Alaska driver’s license required. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Preferred State of Alaska Basic Fire Fighter certification or higher.

Responsibilities

Performs maintenance on all Borough equipment in all departments. Includes all seasonal port equipment to be maintained and repaired before seasonal start-up, and during the season. Performs maintenance on all Port equipment with special emphasis on Taylor Forklifts. Maintains Solid Waste equipment and Waste Water equipment. Winterizes all equipment as needed

Duties and Tasks Performed
  • Service and repair transportation vehicles including, police, fire/emergency services, utility, and administrative vehicles.
  • Service and repair diesel equipment including, but not limited to, dump trucks, cranes, forklifts, loaders, graders, dozers, and backhoes.
  • Performs realignment and diagnostic procedures on vehicles.
  • Schedules & performs routine maintenance for all Borough owned/operated vehicles.
  • Fills out equipment maintenance reports and enters Work Orders to track long-term maintenance costs.
  • Submits parts/equipment requisitions to administration.
  • Keeps track of parts room stock inventory.
  • Operates equipment if necessary.
  • Includes maintenance of all Solid Waste and Waste Water equipment.
  • Includes periodic maintenance of all Borough facilities.
  • Winterizes all Port equipment.
  • Responsible for keeping maintenance area safe, clean, and organized.
  • Annual certification, first aid, CPR, Taylor maintenance, Linkbelt maintenance, Forklift, and crane certifications.
  • Perform as a Firefighter when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
