Compensation
Up to a $20,000 sign‑on bonus may be available depending on qualifications and experience.
Primary Purpose of JobThe primary purpose of this position is to inspect, evaluate, repair, install and maintain all classes of overhead and underground power transmission and distribution lines, and substations in a safe manner. The employee may direct the work of Apprentice Linemen and collaborates with other department employees to ensure safe and coordinated operation of the utility system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Install, maintain and repair primary and secondary equipment on electric transmission, distribution and substations.
- Test, maintain and install duct lines, cables, conduit, risers, circuit breakers, transformers and associated substation equipment.
- Operate heavy equipment and vehicles.
- Climb poles or towers, ride in bucket attachments to truck‑mounted boom and other overhead devices necessary to access electric lines.
- Work in ditches, culverts, vaults and other underground situations necessary to access electric lines.
- Install and maintain company‑owned customers’ outdoor lighting equipment.
- Investigate outages.
- Perform preventative maintenance system checks.
- Ensure the safety of co‑workers and the general public.
- Perform switching on circuits to de‑energize for clearances and hold orders.
- Participate in regular job briefings and safety meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Apprentice Linemen work under close supervision by a Journeyman Lineman based on completion of a four‑year apprenticeship in the AJEATT or equivalent program.
- Principles, practices, methods, equipment and tools used in electric transmission and distribution systems and substations.
- Federal and state safety law and regulations, guidelines, and required equipment.
- Wiring diagrams and electric and building codes.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions and rules for electric distribution and transmission operation and maintenance.
- Switching procedures during power outages and emergencies.
- Basic first aid and CPR.
- Operate a personal computer using Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, Outlook.
- Work on energized and de‑energized high and medium‑voltage electrical lines.
- Operate diggers, aerial lifts, bucket trucks, backhoes, tensioners, pullers, cranes and other heavy equipment.
- Use hand tools to connect wires to terminals and attach hardware to cable.
- Perform tree trimming.
- Multi‑task with strong attention to detail.
- Read and interpret designs and specifications related to electric distribution and transmission.
- Climb poles, ladders, and other overhead equipment necessary to access electric lines.
- Work in ditches, culverts, vaults, and other underground, confined spaces.
- Communicate well orally and in writing, using technical and non‑technical language.
- Understand and follow oral and written policies, procedures and instructions.
- Prepare and present accurate reports containing findings and recommendations.
- Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and oral instructions.
- Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under time‑sensitive deadlines.
- Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Journeyman Lineman certification or license.
- Certificate of Fitness as a Journeyman Lineman issued by the State of Alaska.
Job Requirements
- Current or ability to obtain a current Pole Top and Bucket Truck Rescue test certificate within 90 days of hire, annually per OSHA .
- Maintenance of Alaska Certificate of Fitness every 2 years as required by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
- Random drug and alcohol screening as required for safety and regulatory compliance.
- Wear appropriate PPE and right attire for safety purposes and the work assigned.
- Maintain all required certifications during employment.
- Be on‑call and available to work any hours during a 24‑hour period, especially in an emergency.
- Possession or ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska.
