JOB SUMMARY

The Heavy-Duty Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on heavy construction vehicles and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. Reporting to the Fleet Shop General Foreman and Lead Mechanic, this role services a wide range of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, front-end loaders, motor graders, tractor-trailers, water trucks, and other construction vehicles.

Key responsibilities include inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, repairing, and replacing major mechanical systems, including engines, fuel systems, hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, suspension, steering, and transmissions, while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and equipment performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Inspect heavy construction vehicles and equipment to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and other operational malfunctions.

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, front-end loaders, motor graders, tractor-trailers, water trucks, and other construction vehicles.

  • Troubleshoot, adjust, repair, and replace major components and systems, including engines, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, suspension, steering, and transmissions.

  • Disassemble, repair, and reassemble vehicle and equipment components using hoists, hand tools, pneumatic tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and diagnostic equipment.

  • Perform preventive maintenance services, including lubrication, fluid changes, inspections, and scheduled maintenance to maximize equipment reliability and service life.

  • Operate vehicles and heavy equipment to diagnose mechanical issues, verify repairs, and ensure safe and efficient operation.

  • Perform maintenance and repair work in arctic and other extreme weather conditions while adhering to established safety procedures.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly cleaned, maintained, and stored.

  • Assist with maintaining parts, materials, and supply inventories to support fleet maintenance operations.

  • Complete maintenance records, repair documentation, and other required reports accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Follow all applicable safety regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures while performing assigned duties.

  • Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures.

  • Support AES zero-incident safety culture and assume personal accountability and responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities, and operations.

  • Other duties will be assigned to this position as needed.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

  • A valid (U.S issued) Driver's License is required.

  • A North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) safety training certification is required.

  • The ability to work 84 hours a week on a 2x2 rotation is required.

  • At least five (5) years of experience troubleshooting and repairing power trains, hydraulic, air and electrical systems is required.

  • At least five (5) years of experience maintaining, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing Kenworth and Western Star tractors;
    Link-Belt and Grove cranes (50- to 150-ton capacity);
    Caterpillar D9 dozers, excavators, 14H and 16H motor graders, and vibratory compactors;
    Genie manlifts;
    Westmark crude oil/diesel tankers and 325-barrel vacuum trailers; and Volvo L70 to L220 wheel loaders is required.

  • Extensive experience utilizing Cat, Volvo, Cummins, John Deere, and/or Detroit diagnostic troubleshooting programs is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Five (5) or more years of experience working as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic specifically in the Petrochemical or Oil and Gas industry, on the North Slope, and/or in other Arctic environment is preferred.

  • Ten (10) or more years of experience repairing Cat, Cummins, John Deere, Volvo, Detroit, and Kubota engines as well as Cat, Volvo, Genie, Link Belt, Kenworth, and other heavy equipment is preferred.
