Position: Able Seaman (Entry‑Level Deckhand)
Job Type: Temporary
Pay Range: $448 daily rate
What can you expect?As an Able Seaman you will work on a vessel as an entry‑level deckhand with additional duties in the engine room. This qualified member of the deck department may work as a watch stander and/or deck worker. You will be responsible for maintaining and operating deck equipment onboard the vessel, mooring operations, and making/breaking tow. Over time, increasing levels of responsibility may be given as your knowledge and abilities grow.
Responsibilities- Assist with loading, lashing, unlashing, and discharge of cargo.
- Clean tug and barges.
- Assist with handling fuel and freight.
- Act as lookout and maintain watch on deck and in engine room.
- Assist Chief Engineer when required.
- Perform general maintenance, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in deck department.
- Operate deck machinery (e.g., windlass, winches) during mooring/unmooring and operate cargo gear.
- Perform job safely and sea manlike manner in accordance with company policies, procedures, and regulations; perform only functions and tasks for which trained.
- Follow safety, company policy manual, and other material provided by company.
- Live and work aboard vessel for extended periods.
- Maintain constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Perform other duties as directed.
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of equipment, policies, procedures promoting safe and effective operations of a cargo vessel.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for moving cargo by sea.
- Advanced knowledge of appropriate use of emergency equipment on board.
- Ability to perform tasks and solve practical problems normally encountered by a deckhand, including knot selection, tying, hazard avoidance, and responding to orders.
- Ability to use equipment necessary to perform deckhand tasks.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Reliability, responsibility, and dependability; ability to fulfill obligations.
- Attention to detail and thoroughness in work.
- Problem‑solving, clear decision making in crisis, clear communication of instruction; perform short and long‑term planning to accomplish vessel and company goals.
- Logical reasoning to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
- Remain focused and aware of surroundings.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of Able Seaman experience.
- Current MMC with AB endorsement.
- Basic Safety and Firefighting training.
- Current TWIC card.
- Must pass and maintain a Coast Guard physical exam for merchant mariners.
- Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a vehicle under company driving policy (preferred).
- Ability to pass drug, driving (if applicable), and background screenings.
- Previous Alaska water navigation experience.
The navigation season in Western and Interior Alaska lasts approximately 180 days, with crews working 12 hours per day, 7 days a week during the season. The job requires long periods away from home, high physical demands, and adaptation to changing conditions in close quarters. Deckhands work 12‑hour shifts as directed by Captain or Chief Mate.
