This posting for Customer Service Assistants Only as part of the Paragraph 1- (P-10) Process

Performs a variety of manual labor tasks throughout the Rail Shop facilities.

Qualifications PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs various cleaning tasks within the shop and office, such as: washing air conditioning units, sweeping, mopping picking up trash, emptying garbage cans, etc.
  • Lifts, carries and maneuvers materials throughout the work area.
  • Transports materials using hand trucks, wheel barrows, forklifts, pay loaders, jeeps and other material handling equipment.
  • Services rail cars before leaving the shops.
  • Loads and unloads materials from trucks and other vehicles.
  • Mows lawns, shovels snow, and spreads salt, sand and stone for ground maintenance. Cleans interior and exterior of rail cars. Transports shop company vehicles to various locations for vehicle maintenance and fueling. Sets up/tears down meeting rooms for conferences and various shop activities. Cleans and maintains outside perimeter of shop grounds and bus shelters located at facility.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to stand while performing clean up duties, walk throughout the shop while performing duties, sit while operating forklift, lift when supplying boxes, buckets, garbage cans, shoveling snow, carry garbage cans, brooms, cleaning supplies, push mops, brooms, lawnmowers, wheel barrows, hand trucks, and pull buckets, rail car wheel assembly, motors, air conditioning units, garbage dumpsters.
  • Must be able to climb in and out of trains, ladders; onto forklift, in and out of pits, and to balance while using heavy equipment and other materials while loading and unloading trucks.
  • Must be able to stoop to pick up paper and debris from shop area and yard, kneel to place supplies on lower storage shelves, and crouch to sweep pits.
  • Must be able to reach to retrieve supplies and handle mops, brooms, buckets and pails.
  • Must be able to talk to communicate instructions and hear warning alarms; job instructions and announcements.
  • Must be able to see near for open pits, far for awareness of moving trains, jeeps and have color vision to see fire exits, recognize various markings on containers and machinery and be able to breathe while wearing respiratory protection (filter resistance).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Required to possess the skills necessary to operate industrial material handling equipment, including forklifts, pay loaders, jeeps, etc.
  • Required to possess the skills necessary to start and operate a variety of small engine equipment, e.g. lawnmowers, snow blowers, steam jennies, pumps, etc.
  • Must perform the physical activities associated with this position.
  • Must read and understand written and verbal position related instructions.
  • Must possess knowledge of the physical layout of the Rail Shops.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Subject to normal shop working conditions and performs outside seasonal work in yards and works outside in existing weather conditions.
  • Exposed to extreme cold when working outside during winter months.
  • Exposed to extreme heat when working in certain shop areas in summer months while wearing rain suits, tyvek coveralls, and respirators.
  • Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions when washing rail cars, air conditioners, car windows.
  • Expose to noise and vibrations from various machinery, power lawnmowers, snow blowers, and various other shop operations (riveting, etc.).
  • Exposed to mechanical hazards from steam guns, lawn mowers, snow blowers, pay loaders.
  • Exposed to electrical hazards, approximately 600 volt 3rd rail, or near electrical tools and equipment.
  • Exposed to Burns while checking battery and water in form lift, working near welding equipment and with cleaning solvents.
  • Exposed to chemicals from certain soaps and cleaning solvents, waste materials.
  • Exposed to heights when climbing on ladders, fork lifts and rail cars.
