Job Overview

This position is responsible for managing all facets of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database, a nationally validated, risk‑adjusted, outcomes‑based program that measures and improves the quality of surgical care. The role includes collecting, documenting, and entering reliable data for all eligible surgeries, and working closely with departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and special projects.

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Required:

Associate’s degree in Nursing.

Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Required:

5 years of perioperative experience, including at least one year in a hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research, or medical records.

Required:

Current RN license in the state of practice.

• Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
• Proficiency with Windows‑style applications and keyboard use.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, able to present information clearly and professionally to varying audiences.
• Ability to ask clear questions for appropriate support from superiors and peers.
• Knowledge and experience in quality improvement or patient safety.

• Identify surgical patients for inclusion in the program through application of inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols.
• Collect preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components through effective use of hospital medical record systems.
• Enter data accurately and in a timely manner into the program’s database, meeting caseload accrual requirements.
• Serve as an educational resource on the STS for internal and external audiences by developing educational materials and delivering presentations.
• Maintain professional development and current clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials.
• Establish effective working relationships with staff in specialty clinics, medicine, nursing, medical records, and information systems departments.
• Adapt communication style to the specific patient population, including privacy respect, patient introduction, service explanation, permission requests, and communication style.

Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the area of responsibility and ensure compliance with all such laws, regulations, and standards.

Medium work:
Exerting 20‑50 pounds of force occasionally, 10‑25 pounds frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. The role requires walking, standing, and may involve pushing or pulling. Must be able to stoop, bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands, have manual dexterity, travel between facilities, and work a flexible schedule (e.g. more than 8 hours a day).

Duties involve routine exposure to blood, body fluid, tissue, and potential hazardous medications or waste. Occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases is present.
