Special Education Teacher

Under direction, the purpose of this position is to provide effective instruction which demonstrates adequate knowledge and experience working with/teaching children with special needs in a public-school environment and shows evidence of careful planning and adherence to professional standards as well as course descriptions, program and course competencies and requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include The Following. Other Duties May Be Assigned.
  • Prepares and follows course outline/plans, gathers materials before class, prepared and ready to begin class on time. Develops a comprehensive instructional sequence for each class.
  • Engages students in learning and the instructional strategies used to help students gain better insight into the subject matter
  • Utilize quality teaching practices by engaging consistently with the students to monitor understanding and foster learning.
  • Creates and implements a physical and interpersonal classroom environment that is respectful and supportive of student learning and various ability levels.
  • Demonstrates extensive content knowledge and engages the learner in construction of learning within the discipline and subject matter being taught.
  • Observes students, prepares and grades tests, assignments, class projects and grade reports in a timely manner.
  • Observation of students in their own classroom setting to provide coaching and support in teaching practice to meet teacher licensure standards.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports including up to date test files and curricular plans.
  • Maintains course and student data for reporting to Dept. Of Public Instruction and NC Community College system office required for Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs)
  • Submits college reports, including but not limited to attendance, grades and distance learning reports each semester and accreditation data reports as requested by the required deadlines.
  • Reflect on teaching strategies used and student success in courses as stated by course and program learning outcomes.
  • Remains current with education trends and policies.
  • Participate in annual program advisory committee and/or provides program evaluation as required.
  • Serves as a resource and support to students.
  • Ability to reflect on teaching practices and receive annual course and teaching practice feedback from supervisor.
  • Attends and participates in college related functions as able such as, but not limited to orientations, program meetings, staff development activities, relevant workshops, graduation ceremony.
  • Ability to function in group settings with a diverse group of adults, primarily students and to collaborate closely with fellow colleagues.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, honesty, and consistent and sound judgments regarding the care of children, families, colleagues and adult college students.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education Minimum:
Master's degree in Special Education, Education, or Child Development with a minimum of 18 master level special education focused semester credits. NC Teacher licensure certification in Special Education.

Education Preferred:
Master's degree or higher in Special Education with a minimum of 18 master level special education focused semester credits and coursework in Community College Teaching/Adult Education and quality online teaching practices. Master teacher certification is a plus.

Experience Minimum:
Two (2) or more years of previous experience teaching children with special needs in a public-school classroom with ability to demonstrate using diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to develop and revise objectives and/or tasks; maintain accurate records to document student performance; develop an instructional plan that matches/aligns objectives, used available human and material resources to support the instructional program.

Experience Preferred:
Five (5) or more years of previous experience as a teacher of children with special needs with ability to demonstrate using diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to develop and revise objectives and/or tasks; maintain accurate records to document student performance; develop an instructional plan that matches/aligns objectives, used available human and material resources to support the instructional program.

A minimum of 1 year experience in teaching/training/mentoring of teachers of children with special needs, and one (1) year teaching in higher education. Master teacher certified.
