TITLE: Digital Learning and Media Specialist

FLSA STATUS: Exempt, 12 Month Teacher Salary

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid North Carolina teaching license
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or the equivalent for licensure as a school library media coordinator by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Minimum of three years experience as a school library media coordinator.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Instructional Technology

JOB GOAL: To provide support in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school library program to promote student learning and teacher effectiveness for the benefit of the system’s total educational program.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all rules, policies and procedures of Johnston County Public Schools, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to schools and school libraries.
  • Provide effective support in developing, implementing, and evaluating plans for a comprehensive, system wide school library program.
  • Provide school level support for the integration of the Digital Learning Standards, as well as the NC Professional Standards for School Library Media Coordinators.
  • Assist in the planning and design of new, renovated, and existing school libraries.
  • Assist in the development of professional learning for school librarians and other school system personnel that incorporates current research based instructional strategies.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of school library best practices, instructional strategies, and professional education research.
  • Work with principals, teachers, system-level directors, and other media/technology staff to assure standardization and equity of resources across programs and buildings by maintaining a consistent district wide inventory management system for school library materials.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Learning Team to participate in the ongoing evaluation of digital learning within the district and the design/implementation of the Digital Learning Plan.
  • Assist in the selection and purchasing of digital resources at the school and district levels; pursue funding for digital learning endeavors through grant writing or other alternative funding sources; assist with the NC Digital Learning & Media Inventory at the school and district levels.
  • Collaborate with NCDPI, and other district and school personnel to affect student achievement and teacher effectiveness.
  • Support school media coordinators in the day-to-day operation of the school library program and facilitates an active mentoring program for new school librarians.
  • Facilitate committee meetings and structure to plan and coordinate district academic competitions for Battle of the Books or similar events. Responsible for supervision of monetary purchases and contracts related to competitions.
  • Adhere to and advises school personnel regarding copyright as well as other laws and guidelines pertaining to the distribution and use of resources.
  • Attend meetings and staff development functions; participate in a wide variety of school-system and professional groups and committees.
  • Implement an ongoing collection development and evaluation process, in collaboration with the Media and Technology Advisory Committee, that focuses on a variety of formats and resources to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Interacts effectively with students, staff, administration, and the general public to promote and expand the school library media program.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested by the Executive Director of Instructional Technology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
  • Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
