Job description for Teacher – Johnston County Public Schools Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability – Smithfield, North Carolina. Starting date: immediately.
Job DescriptionSUPERVISES:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
PURPOSE:
To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
- A. Major Function:
Management of Instructional Time The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task. - B. Major Function:
Management of Student Behavior The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, for student verbal participation, and for student movement; frequently monitors all students; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, yet maintains the dignity of the student. - C. Major Function:
Instructional Presentation The teacher begins with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in a comprehensible manner, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, makes smooth transitions, and summarizes the main points at the end. - D. Major Function:
Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; poses clear, one‑at‑a‑time questions. - E. Major Function:
Instructional Feedback The teacher provides timely feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and offers sustaining feedback after incorrect responses. - F. Major Function:
Facilitating Instruction The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide goals; uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives; maintains accurate records; uses available resources to support instruction. - G. Major Function:
Interacting Within the Educational Environment The teacher treats all students fairly and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community. - H. Major Function:
Performing Non‑Instructional Duties The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws, policies, and regulations, follows a professional development plan, and demonstrates growth.

Performs other related work as required.
Degree in education or in a related area qualifying for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions- Physical Requirements Ability to use equipment and classroom tools, lift, carry, push, pull, and perform light work.

- Numerical Aptitude Ability to use formulas, perform arithmetic, percentages, and basic statistics.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude Ability to inspect items for correct dimensions.
- Motor Coordination Ability to coordinate hands and eyes for office equipment.
- Manual Dexterity Ability to handle various items with minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Color Discrimination Ability to differentiate colors and shades.
- Interpersonal Temperament Ability to handle people beyond instructions; adaptable to stress and emergencies.
- Physical Communication Ability to talk, hear, and communicate by telephone.
