Position: RN Clinical Nurse II  -  Medical/Surgical Department

Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

3rd Floor – Medical/Surgical

Third Floor Johnston Health, Smithfield is a 33‑bed Medical Surgical Unit that serves primarily medical patients, although pediatric patients are seen occasionally for overnight observation. Third Floor nurses will get exposure to wound/wound‑vac care, tube feedings, and tracheostomies and will care for patients with a variety of medical diagnoses, to include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Altered Mental Status
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hypotension
  • Diabetes
  • Shortness of Breath, among others

Full time is three 12‑hour shifts. Our standard shifts are 0645‑1915 and 1845‑0715 with every other weekend. Holidays are rotated among staff. Each shift is staffed with a charge nurse and nurses are paired with an NA teammate to assist with care. Nurse‑to‑patient ratios on the unit are typically 1:5 or 1:6.

Responsibilities
  • Education - Identifies and meets learning needs of self, attends education programs, uses patient education materials, assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers, and assesses developmental level and factors affecting ability to learn.
  • Evaluation of Care - Identifies expected patient outcomes, seeks guidance when needed, participates in interdisciplinary discussion of patient care, and communicates relevant information for continuity of care.
  • Implementation - Demonstrates competence with complex patients across physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects, performs bedside point‑of‑care testing, uses organization policies and procedures, organizes and prioritizes care, and consults with resources for complex care or discharge planning.
  • Leadership - Develops goals for professional growth, achieves or renegotiates goals, facilitates intra/interdepartmental collaboration, participates in unit goal achievement and performance improvement, uses communication systems, promotes cost‑effective care, gives feedback, is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines, and promotes a safe, clean, secure environment.
  • Patient Assessment - Recognizes data from complex situations, prioritizes physical, psychosocial, educational and safety needs, synthesizes data for communication, assesses discharge needs, and develops relationships with families to advocate for patients.
  • Planning - Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update care plans, utilizes multidisciplinary resources, uses full range of communication, addresses cultural and ethnic issues, and prioritizes tasks for complex patients.
  • Research - Reads relevant journals and brings practice‑applicable ideas to staff for assessment of applicability.
Education Requirements
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • One (1) year of nursing experience.
