Lampe & Malphrus Lumber Company is seeking a hands-on Health and Safety Professional to lead our sawmill's safety program and strengthen a culture where employees look out for themselves and one another.
This is not a desk-only safety position
. You will maintain an active presence on the mill floor, working directly with employees, supervisors, maintenance, and leadership to identify hazards, improve work practices, reinforce safe behaviors, and ensure safety concerns receive timely follow-through.
We're looking for someone who can balance compliance, accountability, and relationships; someone employees trust and leadership can rely on to keep safety moving forward.
What You'll DoLead safety programs, inspections, training, documentation, and continuous improvement efforts.
Maintain a regular presence on the mill floor to identify hazards and reinforce safe work practices.
Build relationships with employees and involve them in identifying and resolving safety concerns.
Coach supervisors on safety leadership, accountability, and consistent expectations.
Coordinate new-hire safety orientation, ongoing employee training, and contractor safety.
Support and monitor safe work practices including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), PPE, machine safety, and hazard identification.
Investigate incidents and near misses, identify contributing factors, and track corrective actions through completion.
Maintain OSHA and other required safety records, documentation, and training records.
Communicate safety performance, trends, concerns, and priorities to leadership.
Coordinate occupational health services and emergency preparedness.
Recommend practical improvements to reduce workplace injuries and hazards.
Support our third-party environmental consultant as needed.
Required Qualifications
Associate degree or higher in safety, occupational health, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or a related field plus at least 3 years of relevant safety experience; OR
7 years of directly relevant safety experience may substitute for the degree.
Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards.
Experience with safety inspections, incident investigations, employee training, and corrective actions.
Strong communication, organization, documentation, and record keeping skills.
Ability to build trust while confidently addressing unsafe behaviors and holding employees and supervisors accountable to safety expectations.
Ability to work independently, prioritize concerns, and follow issues through resolution.
Willingness and ability to maintain a regular presence on the mill floor across operating shifts.
Safety experience in a sawmill, lumber/wood products facility, manufacturing environment, or other industrial operation.
Professional safety credential such as ASP or CSP.
Knowledge of environmental systems and compliance, including air permits, storm water, spill prevention, or waste management.
First Aid/CPR certification and/or experience coordinating workplace emergency response.
This position works regularly in an active sawmill and industrial environment. Candidates must be comfortable working around heavy machinery, moving equipment, noise, dust, and outdoor conditions, including hot summers and cold winters.
The position requires regular walking and standing throughout production areas and the ability to work across operating shifts when needed. Appropriate PPE is required.
