Plumber II

Location: Facility Services

Salary: Pay Grade 67

Reports To: Plumbing Foreman

Term of Employment: Full time - 12 Months

Job Goal: Performs a variety of tasks to help ensure the day‑to‑day success of the school district’s plumbing and irrigation systems.

Knowledge and Attributes
  • Reliable, self‑motivated, with strong work ethic and experience in sports field irrigation systems and plumbing service and repair.
  • Working knowledge of the mechanical principles of plumbing equipment, components, and their functions for troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Ability to repair and maintain existing irrigation systems, including replacement of piping.
  • Ability to use locating tools to find and repair irrigation electrical systems and components, and to drain lines in plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of backflow assemblies and ability to troubleshoot and make repairs.
  • Knowledge of tools required for repair and installation of plumbing and irrigation system service repairs.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely use a multimeter for confirming electrical current and identifying correct voltage, amp, and ohms for specific equipment.
  • Knowledge of well pump system components, functions, and operations.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to maintain positive relationships with school personnel and other facility services members.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety hazards, and safety practices.
  • Computer skills, including Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive.
  • Knowledge of building, fire, and life safety codes and regulations for school facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work under the supervision of the Plumbing Foreman and Plumbing Supervisor to install, maintain, operate, diagnose, and repair existing plumbing and irrigation systems at JCPS facilities.
  • Perform repairs or replacement of toilets, sinks, faucets, flush valves, and all plumbing components, including drain cleaning, water line repairs or replacement inside and outside structures, and repair of broken sprinkler lines, solenoid zone valves, isolation valves, controllers, relays, and related equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment for excavating repairs when necessary.
  • Perform manual excavation repairs where equipment is not feasible.
  • Work independently or in teams as required.
  • Work overtime, on call rotation, and/or alternate shifts for emergencies, adverse weather, or unforeseen circumstances. May assist with snow, ice removal, or flood mitigation under supervisor direction.
  • Adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all work safely, maintaining a clean environment and using appropriate signage for open trenches, holes, and other hazards.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Make appropriate decisions without assistance from the immediate supervisor.
  • Produce high‑quality work.
  • Respond as needed to assist with emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as assigned.
Physical Requirements
  • Walk or stand for extended periods.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of plumbing and irrigation tools and equipment.
  • Operate machinery and equipment physically.
  • Perform basic life operational functions: grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Walk up and down building steps.
  • Carry, place, climb, and work on ladders of varying heights.
  • Regularly lift, move, carry, push, or pull up to 35 pounds of equipment or objects.
  • Occasionally lift 90 pounds or more.
  • Work in confined spaces.
  • Work in outdoor environments, hot or cold.
Acceptable Training and

Special Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED from regionally or nationally accredited institutions.
  • Vocational or Technical School training preferred.
  • Backflow assembly testing certification preferred.
  • Multitrade experience with a concentration in plumbing.
  • Three years experience with plumbing systems service and repair preferred.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
