Overview
The Johnston County Department of Social Services (DSS) seeks a Social Worker—Investigative Assessment and Treatment for the In‑Home Services Unit. The mission is to serve, aid, and protect vulnerable children and adults and strengthen families through human services programs promoting health, self‑sufficiency, and protection.
ResponsibilitiesDevelop Family Services case plans or intervention plans for cases of abuse, neglect or dependency.
Conduct family assessments and monitor progress toward identified goals, providing after‑hour/on‑call coverage as needed.
Provide intensive in‑home mentoring, guidance, and connect families with community resources and services to eliminate intervention and maintain the family unit.
Seek legal intervention to ensure child safety and conduct reviews of the case plan at prescribed intervals.
Supervise, train, or instruct lower‑level social workers, students, interns.
Qualifications- Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices, and their application to complex casework, group work and community problems.
- Considerable knowledge of a wide range of medical, behavioral, and psychosocial problems and their treatment.
- Considerable knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention techniques; knowledge of governmental and private organizations/resources in the community.
- Knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies governing the program; general knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and treatment as related to clinical interventions.
- Skill in establishing rapport with a client and assessing psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological aspects of client issues.
- Ability to supervise, train, or instruct lower‑level social workers, students, interns.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of caseload and families, as well as civic, legal, medical, social, and religious organizations.
- Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
• Master’s Degree in a Child Welfare Collaborative program from an accredited school of social work, plus one year of social work or counseling experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree in a Child Welfare Collaborative program from an accredited school of social work, plus one year of directly related experience, or bachelor’s degree in social work plus two years of social work or counseling experience.
• Four‑year degree in a human services field or related curriculum with at least 15 semester hours in social work or counseling courses, and three years of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four‑year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or a related human service field.

PreferencesPreference will be given to applicants with prior Child Welfare experience or completion of mandatory Child Welfare training within the last three years. Social Worker III work may be accepted if fully qualified applicants are not located.
