Job Description

POSITION: School Social Worker

LOCATION: Smithfield Selma High

SALARY: State Salary Schedule

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid NC School Social Worker license.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree from an Accredited Social Work Program.
  • Knowledgeable of school organizations and their communities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff in written and oral presentation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide casework, group work, and community services to support the rehabilitation and adjustment of students with special needs (K-12).
  • Provide transportation for medical appointments and evaluations when no other community resources are available.
  • Provide counseling services to students and families.
  • Provide consultation and coordination services to school personnel and community agencies to assist students and families.
  • Plan and participate in joint planning and case management with community agencies such as social services, mental health, and juvenile services.
  • Serve as an advocate for students and parents to assure that the student’s educational, social, emotional, and material needs are met in accordance with established laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Serve as a liaison or school representative in delinquent and undisciplined cases with Juvenile Services and juvenile court activities.
  • Prepare petitions and present pertinent information in Criminal Court on parents in accordance with the North Carolina Compulsory School Attendance Law.
  • Manage and maintain a casework record on each student referred in order to document services.
  • Maintain professional practice and development.
  • Support and implement Board of Education policy as related to school and student situations and communicate this information to students, family, and community members as necessary.
  • While this document is an initial outline of the duties that will be required of this position, the employee’s final job duties are subject to change at any time due to the discretion of the supervisor. It is a job requirement of all employees to complete other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid NC driver’s license.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships with students, staff and parents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
  • Ability to develop and compile a variety of records and reports.
