Position Summary
The Part-Time Firefighter/Advanced Emergency Medical Technician serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. The successful candidate performs within the scope of the policies and procedures of Smithfield Fire & EMS and in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid, rescue or ambulance, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections and public education.
The successful candidate must function effectively as part of a highly trained team under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases.
The successful candidate is required to attend regularly scheduled training to maintain the high level of knowledge, skill, and ability necessary to function safely and effectively as a firefighter and EMS provider in accordance with state law, county protocols, and standard operating procedures.
The work performance of a successful candidate is continuously evaluated for general knowledge, skill proficiency, and ability to work as part of a team.
Receives direction from the captain, or other Chief Officers.
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Drives or rides an emergency vehicle in response to fire, rescue and emergency medical events, hazardous materials response/mitigation and routine requests for help or assistance.
2. Places equipment, lays and connects hose
3. Operates high-capacity pumps and directs water streams
4. Raises and climbs ladders
5. Uses chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses self-contained breathing apparatus.
6. May enter burning buildings as part of a fire suppression team, perform ventilation tasks above ground, carry heavy objects and equipment and rescue injured or trapped victims.
7. Participates in fire prevention programs including public education events and fire code enforcement inspections.
8. Responds to requests for emergency medical care and evaluates patient's condition and/or injuries and administers aid and interventions as per protocol
9. Monitors patient's vital signs, administering medications, establishing, and maintaining adequate airways, controlling bleeding, and splinting broken bones and provides advanced life support at the scene and during transported to hospital.
10. Performs daily preventative inspection and maintenance on the station and its contents, various fire apparatus, equipment, ambulances, and EMS equipment
11. Cleans exterior and interior of vehicle
12. Assures fire apparatus and ambulances are properly stocked with necessary supplies
13. Apprises supervisor as needed to purchase replacement materials or schedule complex repairs.
14. Performs duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma or high school equivalent (i.e. GED).
2. Must have a good driving record, possess, and maintain a valid driver’s license.
3. Must pass a fire department physical examination and physical agility test.
4. Must pass background check and drug screen.
5. Current Firefighter 1 & 2 Certifications from the Utah Fire Rescue Academy.
6. Current Advanced EMT
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
1. Modern fire service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
2. Fire protection systems, evacuation considerations, and building construction regulations for fire safety.
3. Personal computers along with Windows, Word, presentation software, and spreadsheet and database management software.
Skills:
1. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions using the English language.
Abilities:
1. Maintain physical conditioning necessary to perform efficiently in emergency situations; meet medical and physical agility standards as established.
