Director of Operations – Civil / Excavation Contractor

Location:

Logan, Utah

Compensation:
Competitive base salary + significant performance-based bonus

Primary Accountability:
Profitable execution, operational risk, and disciplined growth

The Director of Operations is accountable for winning the right work and delivering it profitably and predictably. This role owns operational decision-making across work selection, estimating, project prioritization, financial performance, equipment and trucking strategy, and operational risk management.

The Director of Operations sets priorities, allocates capacity, and ensures alignment between what is sold, what is built, and what is billed. Day-to-day field execution, shop activity, and truck dispatch are led by the Field Operations Manager, with the Director of Operations focused on outcomes, tradeoffs, and performance.

• Build and maintain relationships with key clients and partners
• Decide which projects the company pursues or declines
• Set pricing and bid strategy with estimating
• Build a robust backlog aligned with capacity, margins, and risk tolerance

• Set estimating priorities and workload
• Review estimates for risk, constructability, and margin accuracy
• Ensure clean handoff from estimating to operations
• Use job outcomes to improve estimating accuracy

• Own overall performance of all active projects
• Set project priorities and start sequencing
• Resolve conflicts when crews, equipment, or schedules are constrained
• Take corrective action when schedule, margin, or risk deviates from plan

• Own company-wide margin performance
• Interpret job cost, cost-to-complete, and margin reports
• Set billing strategy, progress billing timing, and change order execution
• Identify and address margin erosion early

• Own insurance and bonding management
• Manage relationships with brokers, sureties, and advisors
• Ensure backlog, staffing, and controls align with bonding capacity
• Identify and elevate material operational risks

• Set equipment and trucking capacity strategy aligned with backlog and margins
• Decide when to utilize company-owned equipment and trucks versus outside providers
• Establish utilization and cost performance expectations
• Approve major repair, replacement, or capacity changes

• Hold the direct reports accountable for execution and safety
• Ensure alignment across estimating, field operations, accounting, equipment, and trucking
• Drive early escalation and resolution of issues
• Reduce owner involvement through clarity and accountability

• Experience in civil, excavation, or underground utility construction
• Strong understanding of estimating, field operations, job cost control, equipment, and trucking economics
• Proven ability to own margins, priorities, and outcomes
• Credible with field crews, shop personnel, drivers, and accounting
• Direct, disciplined leadership style

Formal degrees are not required. Experience and judgment matter more.
