Job Overview

The Oncology Registered Nurse is focused on patient assessment, patient education, the coordination of care, administration of therapy, symptom management and supportive care for the Oncology and Hematology patients at Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute. The Registered Nurse cares for individuals receiving therapy for oncologic and hematologic problems. The nurse’s responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population.

The nurse’s role includes administration of chemotherapy and other medications and infusions, telephone nursing care, direct patient care and charge capture/billing for all services rendered. The nurse provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. He/she is a member of a multidisciplinary care team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co‑workers and staff as well as collaborating institutions and agencies.

The role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills and an understanding of the principles and practices of clinical research.

Responsibilities

  • Cares for individuals receiving therapy for oncologic and hematologic problems, performing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population.
  • Administers chemotherapy and other medications and infusions, provides telephone nursing care, direct patient care and charge capture/billing for all services rendered.
  • Provides patient and family education, psychosocial and emotional support.
  • Works as part of a multidisciplinary care team requiring effective communication and collaboration with co‑workers and staff as well as collaborating institutions and agencies.
  • Delivers expert, evidence‑based nursing care: implements the nursing process, assesses patient and family needs, promotes health care outcomes, develops and supports clinically accurate diagnoses, collaborates proactively with interdisciplinary team, plans care with measurable outcomes, implements plan, evaluates patient response, documents care, administers medications and other treatments, performs procedures safely and efficiently, may administer blood transfusions, evaluates educational and psychological needs, incorporates needs into plan, educates about treatment modalities, reviews clinical status and laboratory values, consults with provider when appropriate, determines need for referrals, identifies community resources, manages patient care across continuum, prepares and administers chemotherapy per ASCO/ONS Guidelines, recognizes emergency situations, maintains BLS certification, provides telephone triage, performs technical skills including IV therapy and chemotherapy administration, complies with standards, supports nursing department model and quality plan, records charges accurately, collaborates with Clinic Assistant, and serves as resource to medical personnel at other facilities.

  • Ability to function in a busy work setting with patients with complex needs.
  • IV skills strongly preferred.
  • Work tasks require walking, standing, climbing, sitting, bending, reaching and occasional lifting.
  • Excellent hearing, vision, and reading of medical documents.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and multitasking abilities.
  • Must be able to balance multiple tasks and handle normal stress associated with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in English and perform mathematical pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Demonstrates understanding of special needs and behaviors of age groups of the population served: young adult to geriatric.
