Accounting Manager​/Coordinator of Finance

Description

We are looking for an experienced Accounting manager to lead accounting operations and support sound fiscal management for an organization based in Virginia. This role is responsible for overseeing financial reporting, maintaining accurate fund accounting, strengthening internal controls, and guiding key budgeting and audit activities. The ideal candidate brings strong governmental or public-sector accounting knowledge, leadership experience, and the ability to manage detailed financial processes with accuracy and consistency.

Responsibilities:

- Lead day-to-day accounting activities, including general ledger oversight, account analysis, journal entry review, and completion of monthly and year-end close procedures.

- Prepare monthly financial statements and interpret budget-to-actual results to highlight trends, variances, and areas requiring follow-up.

- Maintain accurate accounting records across multiple funds by coordinating reconciliations, cash activity, budget adjustments, and vendor-related updates within the financial system.

- Oversee the accounts payable function, ensuring timely processing, effective workflow management, and adherence to established internal control standards.

- Support annual budget preparation by developing cost projections, reviewing expenditure patterns, and assisting with financial planning related to salaries, benefits, and debt obligations.

- Manage grant-related accounting and perform reconciliations between financial data sources to ensure complete and reliable reporting.

- Compile audit schedules, organize supporting documentation, and assist with compliance reporting to meet audit and regulatory requirements.

- Administer payroll tax filings and coordinate year-end information reporting, including preparation of 1099 forms.

- Provide supervision and guidance to accounting staff while promoting accuracy, accountability, and consistent financial practices.

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field.

- At least 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including supervisory responsibility.

- More than 6 years of experience in governmental accounting, public finance, or a closely related environment is strongly preferred.

- Demonstrated expertise in month-end close, general ledger management, journal entries, and account reconciliations.

- Experience preparing financial reports, supporting audits, and performing variance analysis.

- Knowledge of budgeting processes, internal controls, MUNIS, accounts payable operations, and vendor maintenance.

- Background in educational institution finance is preferred.

- Strong leadership, organization, and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
