Upon offer, employees must submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Investigation.
To teach life skills and basic communication and literacy in connection with the general education curriculum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Attend school on a regular basis and stay 15 minutes before opening and after closing.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in designated locations and times.
- Complete evaluation procedures for students referred for special education service.
- Develop, implement, monitor, and review the Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) for each eligible student on the caseload at least annually.
- Effectively utilize available technology in the development of the IEP and related documents.
- Work with parents in all aspects of their child’s educational program.
- Compile, maintain, and submit all required reports within mandatory timelines.
- Provide educational services according to program guidelines and the established delivery model.
- Implement instructional and assistive technology as determined by the IEP.
- Ensure due process procedural safeguards are afforded to students and parents.
- Use specialized instructional methodology and behavior intervention strategies as indicated.
- Administer ongoing evaluations of student progress toward mastery of established goals and objectives.
- Serve as a resource to regular education teachers who teach mainstreamed disabled students.
- Perform special duties required to meet the unique needs of specific populations (e.g., lifting physically disabled children).
- Prepare paperwork to transition students from Early Intervention into kindergarten.
- Aid with self‑help skills such as bathroom, diapering, feeding.
- Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teaching aides and volunteers; assist the principal with evaluation of their job performance.
- Maintain and improve professional competence through in‑service education and professional growth activities.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Create an effective learning environment through functional displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Develop the evaluation method for the teacher in conformance with guidelines.
- Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain inventory records.
- Review current developments, literature, and technical sources related to job responsibilities.
- Ensure adherence to safety procedures, federal and state laws, and Board policies.
- Perform any other pertinent assignment deemed necessary by the principal to assist classroom efficiency and effectiveness.
Employees must stand, walk, sit, and reach frequently; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally; lift or move up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Mental FunctionsFrequent tasks include analysis, communication, coordination, instruction, computation, synthesis, evaluation, interpersonal skills, compilation, and occasional copy or negotiation.
Environmental DemandsExposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses, weather conditions, heated or air‑conditioned and ventilated facilities, chemical substances used for cleaning, instruction, or equipment operation, and moderate rather than quiet noise levels.
EmploymentContract length:
Nine‑month contract (187 days). Salary range: $48,629 to $96,819 per year (board approved schedule).
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
