Job DescriptionMay also include working as a Behavior Interventionist based on Student Enrollment.
PurposeThe job of Instructional Assistant is performed to provide support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom, working with individual and/or small groups of students and providing clerical support to teachers and staff.
This position reports to the Director of Special Programs and the Building Principal.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and student progress.
- Assist students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments to practice and reinforce learning concepts and help students reach academic goals and grade‑level standards.
- Attend meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Communicate with teachers, students, and staff to evaluate progress, implement IEP objectives, and maintain confidentiality.
- Implement instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of the assigned teacher to present and reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintain classroom equipment, work area, and manual and electronic files to ensure availability of items, provide a safe learning environment, and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitor and supervise students individually or in groups in various settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Perform other related duties as needed, including personal care assistance tasks to ensure efficient operation of the assignment unit.
- Report observations and incidents related to specific students to appropriate instructional or administrative personnel.
- Respond to emergencies (e.g., injured student, physical confrontation) to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
- Support classroom teachers and other school personnel in evaluating and adapting instructional strategies, implementing accommodations, and employing behavior management strategies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective operation of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS required include operating standard office equipment, preparing and maintaining accurate records, utilizing physical restraint practices, adhering to safety procedures, and administering first aid. KNOWLEDGE required includes basic math (fractions, percentages, ratios), understanding of complex written and oral instructions, grammar and punctuation concepts, child development stages, age‑appropriate activities, community resources, instructional methods, cultural competency, and safety procedures. ABILITY required includes scheduling activities, collating data, using job‑related equipment, working with diverse individuals and groups, and problem‑solving with moderate complexity.
ResponsibilityResponsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures, leading or coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget. Resources from other work units may be utilized as needed. There is an opportunity to impact organizational services.
Work EnvironmentPhysical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, and frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Fine finger dexterity is required. The job involves 20% sitting, 50% walking, and 30% standing, in a generally hazard‑free environment.
Experience: Job‑related experience desired.
Education: Community college or vocational school degree in a related field.
Required Testing: Pre‑employment Physical and Essential Functions Test.
Continuing Education / Training: Continuing education requirements.
Clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt.
