Environmental Control Technician II- Nesting Birds

Introduction

The Beach Nester Project works to monitor and protect bird species of conservation concern nesting on Delaware’s beaches.  for more information about the Division of Fish & Wildlife.

This seasonal position will monitor piping plovers, oyster catchers, and terns in Sussex County, DE. Responsibilities include completing beach surveys, monitoring nests and broods, assisting in trapping and banding beach nesting birds, protecting habitat and nests with fencing, signs, predator exclosures and by interacting with the public and assisting with other wildlife projects. Daily work requires walking up to 5 miles in sand, carrying equipment, driving trucks, and using a spotting scope to distinguish colored leg bands and flags on distant shorebirds.

Other duties include data entry, management, and reporting using GIS, Excel, and Access. Applicant will be required to work irregular hours, weekends, or holidays as necessary. The position may be extended past September based on work need.

• Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections, and research projects.
• Collects field samples and data.
• Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.
• Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.
• Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.
• Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment.
• Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
• May assist in processing biological samples.

• Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
• Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
• Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
• Six months experience in narrative report writing.
• Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
• Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits. This posting may be closed on or before the listed date upon filling the vacant position(s).
