Introduction
The mission of Maintenance & Operations is to provide excellence in transportation by keeping the state's road transportation network in a state of good repair through the careful and consistent application of personnel, equipment, and financial resources.
Summary StatementThis position is for an entry‑level equipment operator. The operator learns department rules, regulations, and policies concerning equipment operation, proper material handling, and environmental issues. Work is performed under close direction of a technical superior and may require overtime, storm events, and emergency events on short notice.
Essential Functions- Drive and control on/off‑road equipment to haul supplies to and from work sites, including public highway systems.
- Manipulate equipment with integrated mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems/controls.
- Operate mobile equipment and hand tools for digging, ditching, grading, back filling, mowing, and clearing or excavating.
- Load and unload materials such as rock, debris, earth, trees, abrasives, de‑icing chemicals, hazardous materials using hand tools, loaders, trucks, hand‑truck, forklift, dolly‑lift, or hoist.
- Operate hand tools such as jackhammers, mechanical tampers, power saws, air compressors, hydraulic drivers, and similar equipment for general repairs of roads, grounds, and structures.
- Perform construction/maintenance and repairs in trades such as carpentry, welding, and masonry.
- Respond to environmental/highway emergencies to control snow, storm water, hazardous debris, oil spills, etc.; use traffic control techniques to manage vehicular traffic.
- Execute preventive maintenance, operational checks, pre‑ and post‑walk‑around inspections, and make minor repairs/adjustments to assigned equipment.
- Operate draw and swing bridges to permit water and roadway traffic when required.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment (lubrication, cleaning, servicing).
- Knowledge of operating equipment used in repair, maintenance, and development of roads, grounds, or structures (e.g., jack hammers, power saws, air compressors, hydraulic post drivers).
- Knowledge of operating motorized equipment used for groundskeeping, snow removal, or hauling materials.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled).
- Possession of a valid CDL Class A or B license or ability to obtain one during the initial 90‑day probationary period.
- Pre‑employment drug testing required upon conditional offer.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States (no sponsorship).
